Megan
Roberts was named as the Crime Lab Supervisor in September. Roberts began with
the Maryland State Police as a Crime Lab Technician in 2011. In 2012, she
joined the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as a Crime Lab Technician. She
has worked on more than 600 cases and has more than 60 courses completed in
various specialties.
The Crime
Lab now has three technicians and two Fingerprint Technicians, which allows an
average of 342 fingerprinting appointments a month, drastically more than the
average of 64 a month before. The Crime Lab fingerprinting services for
citizens are for employment purposes and Maryland handgun qualifications.
Appointments
are required for fingerprinting services, which can be made by calling
301-475-4200, ext. *8046 or by scheduling a time online at http://firstsheriff.simplybook.me/v2/ Fingerprinting can now be done on
weekdays, Monday through Friday. Later this fall, services will expand to
Saturdays.
The Crime
Lab, under the St. Mary’s County Criminal Investigations Division, responds to
crime scenes and death investigations, including calls for theft, robberies,
burglaries, assaults, sexual assaults, fatal overdoses, suicides and homicides.
Crime Lab
Technicians process a scene, determining what items are of evidentiary value – processing
and preserving evidence through photography and collecting fingerprints and
DNA. The Crime Lab obtains, processes and extracts video surveillance, still
images and cell phone information. Evidence brought in by deputies is also
processed.
Crime Lab
personnel are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,
including holidays.
“We’re a
full-service crime lab,” Roberts said. “We can accommodate a plethora of
requests and have a network of agencies we can outsource to if needed.” Roberts
is also an instructor in the Criminal Justice Program at the College of
Southern Maryland, teaching Forensic Science and Criminology.
“We are very
fortunate to have the career experience and expertise that Roberts brings as
the new Supervisor of the Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab,” Sheriff Tim Cameron
said. “The work done by our technicians is integral to processing and solving
crimes, providing the solid evidence needed to secure convictions in the
judicial system.”
“And I am
pleased to say that with the addition of two Fingerprinting Technicians to the
office, more citizens will be able to access this service at greater
convenience,” the Sheriff said.
