UPDATE: Fatal Collision in Loveville Under Investigation

 

Oct. 31, 2021

UPDATE: The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of Ryan Nicholas Cherrico, age 31 of Mechanicsville. The investigation determined the operator of the striking vehicle involved in the fatality to be Ryan Cherrico. Cherrico is a white male, 5’11" and weighs 175 pounds with green eyes and brown hair. A warrant has been issued for Cherrico’s arrest for the following charges:

Negligent Homicide by Vehicle Under the Influence

Negligent Manslaughter by Vehicle

Motor Vehicle Unlawful Taking

Driving Vehicle While Under the Influence of Alcohol

Driving Vehicle While Impaired by Alcohol

Driving Motor Vehicle on Highway on Suspended License and Privilege

Failure to Immediately Return and Remain at Scene of Accident Involving Death

On Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021 at 7:30 am, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Point Lookout Road and Loveville Road in Loveville. Deputies arrived on the scene to find a crash between a horse-drawn buggy and a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The operator of the buggy was pronounced deceased on the scene and the operator of the pickup truck fled the area on foot. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation.

 

Preliminary investigation determined the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by an unknown white male, was traveling southbound along Point Lookout Road from Loveville Road. The truck crossed the centerline and struck the horse-drawn buggy, operated by Henry Brubacher Stauffer, age 65 of Loveville. Stauffer was the sole occupant of the buggy and was ejected.

 

At this time, motor-vehicle driver error and alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be contributing factors in the crash.

Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Loveville Under Investigation

 



On Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021 at 7:30 am, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Point Lookout Road and Loveville Road in Loveville. Deputies arrived on the scene to find a crash between a horse-drawn buggy and a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The operator of the buggy was pronounced deceased on the scene and the operator of the pickup truck fled the area on foot. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by an unknown white male, was traveling southbound along Point Lookout Road from Loveville Road. The truck crossed the centerline and struck the horse-drawn buggy, operated by Henry Brubacher Stauffer, age 65 of Loveville. Stauffer was the sole occupant of the buggy and was ejected. The horse survived unharmed. 

At this time, motor-vehicle driver error and alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be contributing factors in the crash.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Under Investigation

 

On Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021 at 4:21 pm, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash on Three Notch Road (Route 235) near the intersection of King James Parkway in Lexington Park. Deputies arrived on scene to find a single vehicle off the roadway and into a tree with the operator receiving life-saving measures. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Preliminary investigation determined a 2012 Toyota Sienna, operated by Mervyn Earl Hampton, age 91 of Scotland, MD, was traveling southbound on Three Notch Road toward Trapp Road. For unknown reasons, Hampton’s vehicle left the roadway, struck multiple small shrubs and crashed into a large tree. Hampton was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown where he was pronounced deceased.

At this time, speed and alcohol are not considered to be contributing factors in the crash.

On View Arrests/Warrants/Criminal Citation

 On View Arrests:

Assault- On October 11, 2021, Dep. Jerew was stationary in the 21600 block of Great Mills Road, in Lexington Park, when he observed Jermell Delontae Jones, age 33 of Lexington Park, run up to the victim and strike the victim in head. Jones was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree. 

Theft- On October 11, 2021, Dep. Burgess responded to the 21600 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for the reported theft. Investigation determined John Andrew Wilson, age 45 of no fixed address passed all points of sale with various items from the business that were not purchased. Wilson was arrested and charged with Theft. 

Assault- On October 13, 2021, Dep. Allebach responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Ambrose Matthew Kyler, age 45 of Prince Frederick, assaulted the victim by punching the victim in the face, during a verbal dispute. Kyler was charged with Assault 2nd Degree. 

Assault- On October 14, 2021, Dep. Rycyzyn responded to the 46300 block Munley Lane in Lexington Park, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Cassandra Renee Furey, age 38 of Lexington Park, punched the victim several times, causing visible injury. Furey was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree. 

Assault- On October 14, 2021, Dep. Walker responded to the 22500 block of Old Rolling Road in California, for the reported disturbance. Investigation determined Steffan Zachary Monger, age 31 of California, struck the victim in face, causing visible injury to the victim. Monger was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree. 

Assault- On October 14, 2021, DFC. Raley responded to the 21900 block of Spring Valley Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported disturbance. Investigation determined Kevin Andre Alleyne, age 28 of Lexington Park, assaulted the victim by hitting the victim in the ribs, and grabbing the victim's neck. Visible injury was observed and Alleyne was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree. 

Disorderly Conduct/Obstructing and Hindering- On October 14, 2021, Cpl. D. Smith responded to the 45500 block of Coosan Court in Great Mills, for the reported disturbance. Taniyah Da'Yon Tyler, age 23 of Lusby, was located lying on the witness' vehicle. Tyler continued to cause a disturbance and hindered officers from responding to another emergency call. Tyler was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Obstructing and Hindering. 

Property Destruction- On October 16, 2021, Cpl. Reppel responded to the 49000 block of Trapp Road in St. Inigoes, for the reported disturbance. Upon arrival Caitlynn Taylor Rader, age 27 of Dameron, was observed on scene holding a baseball bat. Investigation determined Rader threatened the victim with the bat and struck the victim's vehicle with the bat, damaging the vehicle. While deputies were on scene Rader continued to yell and create a disturbance. Rader was arrested and charged with Malicious Destruction of Property and Disorderly Conduct. 

Assault- On October 16, 2021, Dep. Forbes responded to the 46400 block of Chapman Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Jose Herminio Benitez, age 35 of Lexington Park, punched the victim, causing visible injury. Benitez was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree. 

Disorderly Conduct- On October 16, 2021, Dep. C. Hill responded to the 49100 block of Trapp Road in St. Inigoes, for the reported disturbance. Upon arrival Sharmayne Danae Heigh, age 26 of St. Inigoes, was causing a disturbance and yelling.  Heigh was ordered to leave cease her behavior and leave the area. Heigh refused, and was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct. 

Theft- On October 16, 2021, Dep. Jerew responded to the 45400 block of Miramar Way in California, for the reported theft. Contact was made with loss prevention who advised Michael Shone Fear, age 44 of Piney Point, failed to scan numerous items at the self-checkout to the approximate amount of $175.00. Fear was arrested and charged with Theft. 

Assault/Possession of Rifle by Disqualified Person- On October 16, 2021, DFC. Beyer responded to the 46400 block of Sue Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported assault. During the investigation Steven Wendell Mason, age 56 of Leonardtown, was observed by a witness placing a firearm in a vehicle and leaving the area. Mason was stopped by law enforcement in the area of Great Mills Road and Westbury Boulevard and found to have a loaded shotgun in the vehicle. Mason was arrested and charged with Assault, Rifle/Shotgun Possession by Disqualified Person and Illegal Possession of Ammunition. 

Violation of Peace Order- On October 16, 2021, Dep. Edelen responded to the 23000 block of Upland Drive in Bushwood, for the reported peace order violation. Investigation determined Amanda Dawn Piccioni, age 39 of Bushwood, violated a valid court order and harassed  the victim by posting a sign referencing the victim.  Piccioni was arrested and charged with Violation of Peace Order. 

Trespassing- On October 17, 2021, Dep. Graves responded to the 46900 block of South Shangri La Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported trespassing. The victim located William Alexander Sledge, age 64 of Lexington Park, on the property after being served previous no trespass notices. Sledge was arrested and charged with Trespass: Private Property. 

Assault- On October 18, 2021, Dep. Gardiner responded to the 24200 block of Ivy Lane in Chaptico, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Joseph Parran Nelson, age 40 of Chaptico, struck the victim in the face, causing visible injury to the victim. Nelson was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.

DFC Ball Awarded Medal of Valor by Maryland Sheriffs' Association

DFC Ball congratulated by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan 

Deputy First Class Carl Ball was awarded on Monday the Medal of Valor at the annual seminar of the Maryland Sheriffs' Association and Maryland Chiefs of Police Association held in Ocean City this week. 

DFC Ball and Deputy Dylan Glenn were conducting a theft investigation at a retail business in Lexington Park on Dec. 29, 2020 when DFC Ball was assaulted and injured by the theft suspect who attacked the deputies with a large knife. 

DFC Ball used his hand to block the knife strike, but his hand was lacerated by the knife. Deputy Glenn was subsequently knocked to the ground, and the suspect slashed at him. DFC Ball discharged his handgun, striking the suspect. The suspect turned and fled toward the back of the store. Even though he was injured, DFC Ball and Deputy Glenn pursued the suspect on foot. The suspect was taken into custody by the injured DFC Ball and Deputy Glenn. DFC Ball immediately and calmly coordinated additional emergency personnel, ensured prompt medical care for the injured suspect and maintained the scene until relieved by additional personnel. Only then was DFC Ball treated for his injuries from the felonious assault. DFC Ball’s actions saved the life of Deputy Glenn and his composure and prompt care of the suspect was also a critical factor in his survival.

Identity Needed in Suspicious Incident

 


The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is seeking the identity of the woman depicted in this video in a suspicious incident investigation. On Friday, Oct. 15, 2021 at 9:35 am, an unknown black female was observed looking into the window of a silver 2012 Audi Q5 and attempting to open the front passenger door by pulling on the door handle. The suspect then walked up to a residence at the 44300 block of Azalea Way in California and peered inside of the windows. She then leaves the area.

Lekuarius Clifford Plater Wanted for Escape

 

Lekuarius Clifford Plater 

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of Lekuarius Clifford Plater, age 39 of Lexington Park, on a warrant for Second-Degree Escape from the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown.

Plater is a black male with brown eyes, 5’ 10” tall, weighing 200 lbs.

On Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 20500 block of Ridge Road in Lexington Park for the reported stabbing. Deputies located a male victim, age 38 of Lexington Park, suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim was flown to an area trauma center for treatment.

Investigation determined the victim and the suspect, Kimberly Renee Freeman, age 31 of Lexington Park, had a verbal confrontation. During the confrontation, Freeman produced a knife, and stabbed the victim repeatedly. Freeman was arrested and charged with Assault First and Second Degree.

Freeman remains incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, on a no-bond status.

Identity Needed for Theft Suspect

 





The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured in a theft investigation. On Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 at 10:49 pm, the suspect left the Sheetz convenience store in Great Mills with several items of merchandise that he did not pay for.

Sheriff's Office Systems Administrator Retires After More Than 31 Years of Service

Bob Johnston, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Systems Administrator, retired today, Oct. 18, 2021, after more than 31 years of dedicated and professional service. His peers and coworkers wished him well last week as he moves into the next chapter of his life with a defense contractor. 

"We appreciate you very much," Sheriff Tim Cameron told Johnston, "and all of the excellent work you've done for us over the decades." 

"Since I started here in 1990 as a college intern, the Sheriff's Office has been my second home," Johnston said. "I want to thank all the law enforcement officers, correctional officers and civilians with which I have had the pleasure to work. It has been an honor to work with all of you to make St. Mary’s County a better place to live."

On View Arrests/Warrants/Criminal Citations

 On View Arrests:

Trespass- On October 6, 2021, Cpl. Roszell responded to the 22000 block of Valley Estates in Lexington Park, for the reported trespassing. Investigation determined Tristao NMN Commodore, age 42 of no fixed address, was told by the victim and deputies on previous calls to leave the victim's property. Commodore continued to return to the property and continued knocking on the door. Commodore was arrested and charged with Trespass: Private Property.

Handgun Arrest- On October 8, 2021, DFC. Ball  responded to the 21600 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, regarding a separate investigation. While investigating the other incident, it was revealed on September 29, 2021, Deandre Marquise Robinson, age 30 of Bowie, discharged a handgun numerous times in the air, with several citizens in close proximity. Robinson was arrested and charged with Firearm-Possession with Felony Conviction, Handgun on Person, and Loaded Handgun on Person.

Assault- On October 9, 2021, Dep. Salas responded to the 46400 block of Midway Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Edwin NMN Solis, age 65 of Lexington Park, assaulted the victim by grabbing and squeezing the victim's face, causing visible injury. Solis also struck a second victim in the hand. Solis was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.

Firearm/Convicted Felon- On October 12, 2021, deputies from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office responded to the 23100 block of Primrose Way in California, for service of court paperwork and a welfare check on Brian Nicholas Wooldridge, age 42 of California. Wooldridge was observed inside the residence, and a witness advised deputies he was in possession of a rifle. Wooldridge refused to open the door and make contact with deputies. Wooldridge also had an active warrant through another agency for his arrest. A rifle was recovered and Wooldridge is prevented from possessing firearms due to a previous conviction. Wooldridge was arrested and charged with Possession of Rifle/Shotgun by Convicted Felon.
