Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Donates Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

In 1994, brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen opened the doors of the first Firehouse Subs restaurant in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Nearly 22 years later, the fast-casual chain known for its hot subs and hearty portions celebrates the opening of the 1,000th restaurant.

To commemorate the milestone and continue the brand’s commitment to heartfelt service and public safety, the founders of Firehouse Subs donated $1 million to support the 1,000 Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Gift Campaign through the brand’s non-profit, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation®. These AEDs were awarded to police agencies in communities served by Firehouse Subs restaurants across the country. Studies from the American Heart Association show the use of an AED within three to five minutes of a victim’s heart-stopping improves odds of survival by nearly 70 percent.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was fortunate to be a recipient of one of the AEDs. Captain Terry Black, Commander of the Patrol Division, received the AED from Darin Atlas, Owner/Operator, Firehouse Subs in California, Maryland.  Captain Black advised the AED would be issued to a patrol deputy immediately for use in the field.  Captain Black further stated “this is another fine example of businesses and communities working together with law enforcement to make St. Mary’s County a safe and enjoyable place to live. The Sheriff’s Office is very appreciative of Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and to Mr. Atlas for nominating the Sheriff’s Office for this donation.”

In 2015, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded more than 230 AEDs to public safety entities nationwide, including law enforcement agencies, first responder groups and schools. Since 2005, the Foundation has donated more than $20 million in funding, life-saving equipment and educational opportunities to public safety organizations in 46 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.

(L-R) Captain Terry Black  stands with Darn Altas, owner of Firehouse Subs in California, who nominated the Sheriff's Office to receive an AED from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

Lexington Park Community Oriented Policing Unit (COPs) Unit Celebrates Three Year Anniversary

To St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron, the job involves much more than just law enforcement. He views his deputies as being part of a team that is also comprised of citizens who have a vested interest in the well-being of their community. He knows that crime can arise in areas where lack of community cohesiveness exists, and three years ago he set out to improve those conditions for the residents of Lexington Park.

In 2013, the central area of Lexington Park was experiencing numerous issues which were affecting the residents and businesses on a daily basis, and Sheriff Cameron wanted to reassure the citizens that his office would be their partner in helping to resolve these issues. In August 2013, Sheriff Cameron instituted the Community Oriented Policing Unit (COPs) in Lexington Park. The COPs Unit consists of Sergeant Clay Safford, Corporal Danny Ray, Corporal Tim Snyder, Deputy First Class Al Beishline and Deputy First Class Vince Pontorno. These deputies are engaged in building relationships with the residents of Lexington Park, while also employing proactive policing techniques to detect and eliminate criminal activity in the area.

One method of proactive policing the COPs Unit employs is the use of police mountain bikes which has proven to be very effective. They often stop to converse with local residents, many of whom they know by name. The deputies also attend community outreach events, conduct presentations such as active shooter training and drug recognition for parents.  During the school year, they visit the two elementary schools in the area on a regular basis.

“This is by far the most rewarding job I have ever had in law enforcement, says Sergeant Clay Safford.” He explained, “Stepping out of our police cars and walking the streets or patrolling on bikes enables us to interact with the community in ways they are not used to seeing. It's positive police encounters and relationship building like this that are helping us to gain trust from the community, and with trust comes increased communication from the public which helps to reduce crime.”

Last night, the Lexington Park COPs Unit attended a Back to School Blast hosted by St. Mary’s Caring. Deputies interacted with school children and their parents realizing the importance of connecting with the youth at a young age to instill in them police are “their friends and helpers” as the COPs Unit likes to say.

“There have been several stories during the last three years where the unit was able to identify a problematic issue within the community, develop a solution, and then apply it over a period-of-time. I am proud of the hard work the unit members do on a daily basis and look forward to doing even more,” said Sergeant Safford.

If you happen to pass a member of the COPs Unit walking the streets or riding a mountain bike while in the Lexington Park area, feel free to stop and say hello and introduce yourself. Today, the COPs Unit celebrates their third anniversary.

SMCSO Hosts Annual “Back to School Shop with a Cop” Program

Our community recognizes that there are often students and families who do not have the financial means to cover the cost of supplies, such as clothing and book bags, needed to start the school year.

In an effort to help these students start the school year on a positive note, the Optimist Club of St. Mary's County sponsors the “Back to School Shop with a Cop” program. Each year, children are selected to do their back to school shopping with a law enforcement officer at the Wal-Mart in California, with funds provided by the Optimist Club and the State’s Attorney.

After the shopping trip, the students are transported via police car to enjoy lunch with the officer who helped them pick out new supplies. This year's lunch was held at the Fraternal Order of the Police Lodge 7, with food graciously provided by Mission BBQ.

The St. Mary's County Shop with a Cop program is an independent 501c3 nonprofit program. Its board of directors is comprised of members of the St. Mary's County Optimist Club and the St. Mary's County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7. The Shop with a Cop program is planned, coordinated and supervised by Lorraine "Bunny" Brewer, Toni and Jimmy Long, Joseph Stanalonis, and Bill Raddatz.

Sheriff Tim Cameron and the men and women of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office sincerely thank all who continue to make this event a success.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Warns Drivers of Common Back-to-School Traffic Violations and Provides Safety Tips

St. Mary’s County's 2016-2017 school year officially begins Wednesday, August 24. Right now, parents and students are meandering through store aisles checking off school supplies, navigating through endless racks of school clothes, and picking out new backpacks. While parents and students prepare to head back to school – the community should, too.

The St. Mary's Sheriff's Office urges residents to make themselves aware of school zones and speed limits throughout St. Mary's County before the first day of school. The influx of school buses and parents transporting their kids to school increases the opportunity for traffic accidents, especially during the first week of school.

Sheriff’s Office deputies will be on heightened alert for residents speeding and passing school buses. In Maryland, fines are doubled for speeding in a school zone or designated school crossing. The law also states that it is illegal to pass a school bus when it displays a stop signal. Failure to stop for a school bus will result in three points on a license.

Drivers should follow these safety tips to avoid a fine or points on their license:
• Allow for extra time traveling, and be patient as bus drivers pick up and drop off students.
• Obey the speed limits and be aware of the reduced limits in the school zones.

• Do not pass school buses when flashing lights are activated and/or crossing arm is deployed.

• Watch for students walking on, standing near, and crossing roadways.

• Avoid electronic distractions (cell phone, radio, etc.)

Safety reminders for students and parents:

• When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing or other behavior that can lead to carelessness. Do not play or stray in the roadway.

• Line up away from the street or road as the school bus approaches.

• Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before stepping onto the roadway.

• Use the hand rail when stepping onto the bus.

• If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk at least ten feet ahead of the bus along the side of the road. Keep going until you can see the driver when you turn around.

• Make sure the bus driver can see you.

• Wait for a signal from the driver before beginning to cross the street.

• When the driver signals, walk across the road, keeping an eye out for sudden traffic changes.

• Do not cross the center line of the road until the driver has signaled that it is safe for you to begin walking.

• Stay away from rear wheels of the bus at all times.
• Talk quietly and remain in your seat while riding the bus.

This message brought to you by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office under the #FocusedonDriving campaign. Distracted and aggressive driving endangers everyone. In an effort to keep drivers' minds on the road, and to reduce frustration, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has implemented an educational initiative, called “Focused on Driving”. The new campaign is aimed at continuing driver education while supplementing ongoing law enforcement methods.
