Cpl. John Kirkner Retires After Two Decades of Service

Corporal John Kirkner retired from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021 after more than 21 years of services as a deputy. 

Cpl. Kirkner joined the Sheriff's Office in 1999 after serving for 22 years in the US Navy as a rescue swimmer. He most recently served in the Sheriff's Office Special Operations Division as a child support deputy. 

"Congratulations on a career well served," Sheriff Tim Cameron told Kirkner. "We'll miss you and see you again soon." 

Kirkner plans on returning to the Sheriff's Office in the near future in a different capacity.

Homicide in California Under Investigation

 

On August 27, 2021, at approximately 11:20 p.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 23200 block of Woodland Acres Road in California, for the reported burglary with an individual shot. Deputies arrived on scene and located an individual, later identified as Tavein Malik Dickens, age 23 of Lexington Park, suffering from a gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were attempted at the scene and Dickens was transported to an area trauma center where he was later pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigation determined Dickens forced entry to the residence through the front door after repeatedly banging on other exterior doors and windows around the residence.  As Dickens entered the residence, he was confronted by the homeowner at which time a struggle ensued.  During the struggle, the homeowner discharged a firearm, striking Dickens in the upper body.

Watch for School Buses as Students Return to Classes on Monday

 


Motorists are reminded that St. Mary's County Public School students return to classes on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021, and to be prepared to stop for school buses as they pick up and drop off children. 

Drivers are required by Maryland state law to stop for school buses that have activated their flashing red lights and to provide at least 20 feet of space from the rear or front of the school bus if approaching from its front. A driver may not proceed until the bus has deactivated its flashing red lights. 

The fine for failure to stop and remained stopped for a school bus with its flashing red lights activated is $570 and three points assessed on a driver's license. 

Drivers are not required to stop for a school bus with its activated flashing red lights if on the other side of a divided highway, as shown in Figure 4 in this example:

Trespass/Assault- On August 16, 2021, Dep. Mattera responded to the 21600 block of Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for the reported trespassing. Investigation determined Nichole Corine Underwood, age 32 of California, was issued a notice not to trespass for the victim's residence. Underwood later returned to the residence, and assaulted the victim by hitting and scratching the victim. Underwood was arrested and charged with Trespass: Private Property and Assault 2nd Degree.

Violate Protective Order- On August 17, 2021, Cpl. Roszell responded to the 46200 block of Collette Lane in Lexington Park, for the reported protective order violation. Investigation determined Jonathon Wade Muckleroy, age 33 of Great Mills, contacted the victim in violation of a valid court order. Muckleroy was arrested and charged with Violate Protective Order.

Violate Protective Order- On August 17, 2021, Dep. Mattera responded to the 22500 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park, for the reported protective order violation. Investigation determined Larry Donnell Dorsey, age 60 of Leonardtown, violated a valid court order by calling and texting the victim repeatedly. Burglary- On August 18, 2021, Dep. Wimberly responded to the 21800 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park, for the reported burglary. Keon William Sanders, age 33 of no fixed address, was located in the hotel room that the employee/witness advised was not rented and should not be occupied. Located on Sanders' person was a suspected CDS smoking device. Sanders was arrested and charged with Burglary 4th Degree and CDS: Possession/Paraphernalia.

Assault- On August 19, 2021, Dep. Myers responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault. Investigation determined De'Quan Sabien Gantt, age 20 of Lexington Park, assaulted the victim by pushing the victim's hand and striking the victim in the face. Gantt was charged with Assault 2nd Degree.

Assault- On August 20, 2021, Dep. Luffey responded to the 21400 block of Exquisite Court in Lexington Park, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Robert Sylvester Hill, age 55 of Lexington Park, pushed the victim and put the victim in a headlock, causing visible injury to the victim. Hill was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.

Lexington Park Man Arrested for CDS Possession

 

In July of 2021, detectives from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Vice/Narcotics Division began an investigation into the distribution of controlled dangerous substances (CDS) by Marcus Jerome Hicks, age 25 of Lexington Park. On August 19, 2021, with assistance from the Emergency Services Team (EST), the Youth Gun Violence Task Force, and the Patrol Division, search and seizure warrants were executed on Hicks’ residence and vehicle. As a result, suspected cocaine and firearms were located.

Hicks was arrested and charged with the following:

CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana

CDS: Possession-Paraphernalia

Firearm/Drug Trafficking Crime

Rifle/Shotgun: Unregistered

Be Alert for School Buses as Children Return to Classes

Identity Needed for Burglary Suspect

 


The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured in a burglary investigation. On Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021 at 1 am, the black male suspect was recorded on video surveillance entering the victim's vehicle at the 23100 block of Poppy Way in California. The suspect removed personal property from inside of the vehicle before moving on to other vehicles in attempts to enter them.

Identity Needed for Theft Suspect

 



Aug. 20, 2021 update: The suspect has been identified. Thank you for your assistance. 

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured in a theft investigation. On Monday, Aug. 17, 2021 at 2:20 pm, the suspect did not scan all of the items in her cart at the self-checkout register at the California Walmart store. Furthermore, the suspect then left the store without paying for any of the items that the suspect did scan at the register.

Burglary/Drug Arrest- On July 31, 2021, Dep. Salas responded to the 21800 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park, for the reported burglary. A witness observed Destiny Marie Ayres, age 19 of no fixed address, force entry to a hotel room. Ayres was previously issued a notice not to trespass for the property. Ayres was located on scene and in the room she occupied was a bag containing rolled paper and suspected cocaine. Ayres was arrested and charged with Burglary 4th Degree, CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana and Trespass: Private Property.

Drug Arrest- On August 2, 2021, Dep. Forbes responded to the 46400 block of Chapman Drive in Lexington Park, for the reported burglary to motor vehicle. The victim advised he located an unknown female inside his vehicle, attempting to steal his property. The female was identified as Jennifer Leigh Heiston, age 36 of no fixed address. Heiston was located on scene and found on Heiston's person was a suspected CDS smoking device containing suspected cocaine residue. Heiston was charged with Burglary 4th Degree, CDS: Possession-Not Marijuana and CDS: Possession of Paraphernalia. Heiston was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for Trespassing.

Assault/Reckless Endangerment/Drug Arrest-On August 4, 2021, Dep. Chase conducted a vehicle stop in the 21400 block of Pegg Road in Lexington Park. Contact was made with the vehicle operator, Kelli Aaliyah Richardson, age 20 of Lexington Park. Suspected marijuana was observed in Richardson's purse and she was advised to exit the vehicle. Richardson was able to get the vehicle in gear, and accelerated at a high rate of speed, dragging both Sgt. Connelly and Dep. Chase down Pegg Road as well as off the roadway. Dep. Chase became dislodged from the vehicle and Sgt. Connelly was able to get the vehicle in neutral and stop the vehicle. Both deputies sustained non-incapacitating injuries as a result of being dragged by the vehicle. Richardson was removed from the vehicle at which time she resisted arrest and kicked another officer on scene. Located in the vehicle were clear capsules containing suspected heroin. Richardson was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault 1st Degree, three counts of Assault 2nd Degree/Law Enforcement Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Resisting Arrest, and CDS: Possession-not Marijuana.

Assault- On August 12, 2021, Dep. Mattera responded to the 21800 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Bobby Raymond Davis, age 35 of Lexington Park, punched the victim in the head, and pushed the victim causing visible injury. Davis also broke the victim's cellphone. Davis was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree and Malicious Destruction of Property.

Fraud/Drug Arrest- On August 13, 2021, Dep. Wynnyk conducted a vehicle stop in the 22000 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park. The operator of the vehicle provided a false name and date of birth, but was later determined to be John Maurice Neale, age 30 of Lexington Park. Neale had outstanding warrants and was taken into custody. Neale was served the outstanding warrants and also charged with Fraud-Person Identity/Avoid Prosecution.

Assault/Resist Arrest- On August 14, 2021, Cpl. White conducted a vehicle stop in the area of Three Notch Road and Wildewood Boulevard in California. The vehicle operator refused to provide his driver's license or name and fled the traffic stop. Deputies followed the vehicle which came to a stop due to traffic. At that time deputies approached the vehicle and advised the operator he was under arrest. The operator refused to cooperate and pushed a deputy's arm on scene. The operator was taken into custody and identified to be Reuben Deppores Reynolds, age 29 of Washington, D.C. Reynolds was charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest, and Fail to Obey Lawful/Reasonable Order. (No Photograph Available)

Trespassing/Theft-On August 15, 2021, DFC. Fenwick responded to the 45400 block of Miramar Way in California, for the reported theft. Investigation determined Kelley Lynn Scott, age 57 of Lusby, stole items belonging to the business and violated a no trespass order previously issued to Scott in 2019. Scott was arrested and charged with Theft and Trespass: Private Property.

Assault- On August 15, Dep. Myers responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault. The victim stated Joseph Axzavis Stewart Jr., age 41 of Lexington Park, struck the victim in the face when the victim was yelling to others in the dayroom. The victim sustained injury to his cheek and Stewart was charged with Assault 2nd Degree.
