For homebound residents wishing to dispose of unwanted or expired medications, St Mary’s County is offering the 3rd annual Medication Collection Day on April 30, 2016.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office will send uniformed officers to the homes of individuals who wish to dispose properly of their unwanted medications.
Working together with the St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services this collection effort is provided to those who, due to mobility or health issues, cannot otherwise safely dispose of their medication.

This effort is in support of the National Take Back Day where Americans in communities across the country have safely discarded more than 350 tons of unused, expired, or unwanted drugs as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Initiative. Properly disposing of unwanted medications is not only good for the environment, but may prevent residents from becoming targets of crime.
“In addition to this annual collection day initiative, St. Mary’s County offers the means for safe disposal of unwanted medications every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” said Captain Daniel D. Alioto, Commander St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, Vice/Narcotics. “To date, nearly 800,000 unwanted medications, 70% of which are controlled dangerous substances, have been destroyed through a partnership with the community.”
Collection boxes located in the front lobby of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office in Leonardtown allow residents to dispose safely of unused or expired medications. Any unwanted medications, prescribed or over-the-counter medications, may be discarded in the drop-box, and all deposits through this program are completely anonymous.
The St. Mary's County Medication Collection and Drop-Off Program is one of the many prevention initiatives supported by the Behavioral Health Action Team (BHAT) of the Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership. The BHAT is comprised of community members and organizations working together to improve behavioral health (mental health and substance misuse) outcomes for all St. Mary’s County residents.
