Barricade Ends in Arrest

On February 28, 2020, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 44500 block of Pasture View Way in Valley Lee, for the reported assault and protective order violation. Prior to the arrival of law enforcement, the suspect, later identified as Jamel Tiant Mitchell, age 35 of no fixed address, barricaded himself inside the victim’s residence and refused to exit the home. Deputies from the Critical Incident Negotiations Team and the Emergency Services Team responded to the scene.

Preliminary investigation determined prior to the barricade, Mitchell had assaulted the victim by grabbing the victim’s wrists and throat during an argument, causing visible injury to the victim. There is a valid protective order in place prohibiting Mitchell from contacting the victim by any means.

During the barricade Mitchell made threats to detonate incendiary devices and shoot law enforcement officers. Mitchell ultimately surrendered to law enforcement without incident. Mitchell was arrested and charged with the following:

Arson/Threat
Threat of Mass Violence
Assault Second Degree
Violate Protective Order

Mitchell is currently incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center on a no bond status.
