Traffic Tip Tuesdays: Following Too Closely

Sec. 21-310.

“The driver of a motor vehicle may not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of the other vehicle and of the traffic on and the condition of the highway.”

Funeral processions are exempted.

State law continues, “As to how closely one automobile should follow another depends upon the circumstances of each case, namely, the speed of such vehicles, the amount of traffic, and the condition of the highway. The driver should act reasonably and prudently, taking these factors into consideration.”

The fine for a driver of a motor vehicle following another vehicle closer than reasonable and prudent is $110 and two points assessed on a driver’s license. If contributing to an accident, the fine is $150 and three points on a license.
