COPs UNIT Traffic Stop Leads to DRUG ARREST

On July 16, 2014 at 3:39 PM, Sergeant Clay Safford, assigned to the Lexington Park COPs UNIT, stopped a green Nissan Altima for a traffic violation on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park. The driver had initially provided Sergeant Safford with a false name; however the false name indicated his privilege to drive was suspended. Deputy Beishline arrived on the scene and smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the rear of the vehicle. As he prepared to inventory the vehicle, which had to be towed, Deputy Beishline continued to smell an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle’s trunk. A search of the vehicle’s trunk revealed a plastic bag containing an approximately 13.4 grams of suspected marijuana. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. While en route, the driver indicated he had provided a false name. The driver was identified as Darious Anthony Jones, 22, of Leonardtown. He was charged with Possession: Controlled Dangerous Substance Over 10 grams, Possession Paraphernalia, and False Statement to a Police Officer.
