Suspect Charged with Resisting Arrest and Assault

On October 31, 2015, Deputy R. Steinbach responded to Woodmere Street in Leonardtown, for the report of an intoxicated subject causing property damage to a residence. Upon arrival, Steinbach observed the suspect assaulting a female victim, holding a baby, by pushing her into a wooden mantle. The suspect, Walter Lee Payne, age 27, of Mechanicsville, was advised he was under arrest at which time Payne actively resisted the arrest.  While resisting arrest, Payne kicked the deputy in the leg and then spit blood in his face. Further investigation revealed, Payne allegedly destroyed a television during an earlier dispute. Payne also grabbed the victim’s baby and squeezed the baby with both hands, causing the baby to cry. Payne was subsequently taken into custody, transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital where he was treated and released.   Payne was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with Three Counts of Second Degree Assault, Resisting/Interfering with Arrest, and Destruction of Property under $1,000.  Payne is currently being held on a $7500.00 bond.
