Sheriff's Office Commemorates Peace Officers Memorial Day

As COVID-19 cancelled local and regional memorial services for National Police Week, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office held its own ceremony on Friday to remember those law enforcement members who have made the ultimate sacrifice across the country. So far in 2020, 77 members of the law enforcement community in the United States have been lost.

The men and women of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office acknowledge those who have made the ultimate sacrifice by wearing a mourning band across their badges. "We also acknowledge those peace officers working in our communities every hour, every day to make America safer," Sheriff Tim Cameron said.

"Remember on May 15 those who go before you," Pastor Charlie Wharton said on Friday.

In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week.

Rocks for LEOs

Rocks for LEOs (Law Enforcement Officers)

In honor of  National Correctional Officers Week this month, several rocks were painted, personalized and delivered to St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office personnel at headquarters and at the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

History of Rocks for LEOs

In 2017, one of the creators of LEOs located a painted rock outside a business. The creators of LEOs then began painting rocks and leaving them outside for others to find as a way of spreading kindness. A few months later, they began painting rocks and leaving them outside local police agencies as a way to show their thanks and appreciation.

In October of 2017, the family located an officer in their neighborhood and provided him with a very special rock they had been carrying with them for months in hopes to find just the right person to give it to. The families became close friends with the officer and his family as a result.

Since then, 3,811 LEO rocks have been painted and distributed to agencies and officers.  The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is honored to be one of the agencies included in such a wonderful act of kindness.

Detention Center Testing Initiative Announced

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) in partnership with St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has launched a universal testing strategy for inmates and employees of the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

"Testing has been going very well this week," Corrections Major Deborah L. Diedrich said. "Inmates at our detention center are your neighbors and family members and we take great strides to ensure their health and welfare, in addition to our Corrections Officers and civilians who work alongside them on a daily basis."

The St. Mary’s County Detention & Rehabilitation Center has been working closely with SMCHD and other community partners during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the continued protection of the health and safety of incarcerated persons and staff.

Preparedness and response efforts have aligned with guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the management of COVID-19 in correctional and detention facilities, including visitor restrictions, daily monitoring of staff and inmate symptoms, use and ongoing stock assessment of personal protective equipment (PPE), and planning for isolation and treatment if needed.

"The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office continues to work closely with our health partners – the St. Mary's County Health Department and MedStar St. Mary's Hospital – as we navigate through these challenging times. I am proud of our community partnership and the progress we are making to keep our residents safe," Sheriff Tim Cameron said.

Community members, healthcare providers, and local business owners are encouraged to visit the SMCHD website for local COVID-19 updates and information at www.smchd.org/coronavirus or call the COVID-19 Community Hotline at 301-475-4911 Monday-Friday from 8am - 5pm.
