Child Neglect – On July 30, 2015, Deputy Schultz responded to a residence on Liberty Street in Lexington Park, in reference to a domestic related argument involving suspect Demetrius Lakies Butler, age 25, of Lexington Park. Deputy Schultz knocked on the door and a 5 year old girl answered. The girl advised she was home alone. Further investigation revealed Butler had left the home at 7:40 AM, while she was asleep. Deputy Schultz found her home alone at 9:05 AM. Butler was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Neglect of a Minor. CASE #44545-15

California, Maryland - The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect pictured below. 

On Monday, July 27, 2015, at 10:00 PM, the suspect loaded several bottles of motor oil in a shopping cart at Walmart located on Miramar Way. He then left the store without paying. The same suspect committed a similar theft at the same Walmart on 7-30-15.

Protective Order Violation – On July 23, 2015, Deputy Jason Smith was walking out of the District Court Carter building when he saw suspect Troy David Yates, age 49, of Lexington Park, who he knew from prior contact. Yates walked over to the victim and began to talk to the victim in violation of an active protective order. The protective order stipulated Yates was to have no contact with the victim. Yates was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Violation Protective Order. CASE#43213-15

Robbery – On July 24, 2015, Deputy Schultz responded to a residence on Midway Drive in Lexington Park, for a reported assault. The investigation revealed suspect Rico Kinta Keys JR., age 20, of Lexington Park, came to the victim’s residence to gather some of his belongings from inside the home. An argument between the victim and Keys ensued. Keys grabbed the victim by the hair and slammed the victim’s head into a wall breaking the victim’s glasses. Keys then drug the victim by the hair to a car parked on Midway Drive and slammed the victim’s head into a window. The victim fell to the ground at which time Keys ripped the cell phone from the victim’s hand and fled the scene. Deputies were unable to locate Keys and a warrant was immediately obtained for his arrest. On July 25, 2015, Keys was located and placed under arrest. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and the warrant charging Keys with 2^nd Degree Assault, Robbery, Theft Under $1,000, Vandalism, and Trespassing was served. APPREHENDED - Murder Suspect Alan Michael Rangel

UPDATE Cody Lacey Homicide: On July 27, 2015, suspect Alan Michael Rangel was located in Jessup, Maryland, and taken into custody without incident by officers with the United States Marshals Service Task Force Fugitive Unit.

Amanda Raye Hartmann age 24, who was with Rangel at the time of his arrest, was also arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact - First Degree Murder. 

Rangel and Hartmann were transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center and incarcerated.

UPDATE 7-26-15: Detectives have obtained an arrest warrant for ALAN MICHAEL RANGEL, age 21, of NO FIXED ADDRESS, for the July 25th shooting on Lavender Lane in Mechanicsville, which resulted in the death of Cody Lacey.  

The warrant charges RANGEL with First Degree Murder, Second Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony/Crime of Violence.

RANGEL is African-American, 5'09" in height, and weighs 202 pounds.

This investigation is ongoing. Additional information will continue to be released as it is developed.

UPDATE 7-26-15: Mechanicsville Homicide Investigation

UPDATE: As the investigation into the murder of Cody Michael Lacey has progressed, detectives developed information regarding the suspect who fired the shots and two suspected accomplices. 

On July 25, 2015, detectives executed a search and seizure warrant on a home in St. Mary's County. Both suspected accomplices, identified Wade Joshua Braithwaite, age 21, of Lexington Park, were located and placed under arrest. Items of evidence related to the investigation were recovered as well. 

Braithwaite was  transported to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and charged with Accessory After the Fact - First Degree Murder.

The shooting victim is identified as Cody Michael Lacey, age 21, of Mechanicsville.

Mechanicsville, Maryland - On July 25, 2015, at 1:28 AM, deputies responded to a home for a reported shooting. On arrival, several people were at the home attending a party. Deputies located a 21 year old male who had been shot. Lifesaving efforts were not successful and the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. 

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. This is an active investigation and additional information will be released as it is developed.

Sex Offender Registry Violation - On July 17, 2015, tier 3 register sex offender Janus Scott Freeman, age 47, of Lexington Park, was arrested by Corporal Raddatz for violating sex offender registry laws. Upon Freeman's release from incarceration on July 8, 2015, he failed to report to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and provide his address as required. Freeman was transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center and charged with Failure to Register by Deadline, Failure to Register as Required by a Tier 3 Sexually Violent Predator, Failure to Provide Notice of Address Change, and Failure to Notify of Address Change Within 5 Days. Burglary - On July 21, 2015, Deputy Lawrence responded to the 21000 block of Great Mills Lane in Lexington Park, after witnesses reported a foul odor coming from the vacant residence. Deputies located suspects Christina Rebecca Davis, age 35, of no fixed address, and Francis Xavier Hill, age 19, of no fixed address, asleep in the basement. Neither suspect had permission to be in the residence and were placed under arrest. They were transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center and charged with 4th Degree Burglary. Lexington Park COPs UNIT Receives John F. Sobola Award

Leonardtown, Maryland - On July 21, 2015, Chief Shawn Davidson from the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, Company 39, presented the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, Lexington Park COPs UNIT with the 2015 John F. Sobola Award.

"All of the interactions we've had with the members of the Lexington Park COPs UNIT have been positive. We love that the unit is community oriented, they get ahead of the problems - to make Lexington Park a better place. They are getting people involved by providing a holistic approach to many complex issues. The COPs UNIT deserves this award. We are very grateful to work with them"- Chief Shawn Davidson.

"The members of the COPs UNIT take great pride in the many relationships we have built with the Lexington Park community over the last two years, especially with the members of the LPVRS. It is an honor to receive the John F. Sobola Award and we realize the significance of it. An important point to remember is that the COPs UNIT is permanent and we will continue to build on what we started nearly two years ago. John Sobola began his volunteer service with the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1952 and served for 36 years. John's message to all who knew him was that of community first and he encouraged everyone to do things to make the world a better place.

State's Attorney's Office needs help finding family members of 1973 murder victims.

The St. Mary's County State's Attorney's Office is asking for the public's assistance in finding family members of decedents from a crime that occurred in 1973.

Scherrell Richard Link was convicted in 1973 of 1st degree murder of Shirley Mottler, Douglas Parks and George Pratt. Link was also convicted of attempted murder of William Craig. The State's Attorney's Office is attempting to locate any family members of decedents Shirley Mottler, Douglas Parks, George Pratt, and William Craig.

Arrests 7-21-15

Theft of Motor Vehicle/Drug Possession – On July 14, 2015, Corporal J. Yingling responded to the Chaptico Town and Country Market in Chaptico, for the report of a stolen vehicle operating in the area. Corporal Yingling saw the stolen vehicle, a blue Ford Escape, in the parking lot. The driver’s door was open with a white male suspect half inside the vehicle. The suspect, identified as Johnny Duane Edwards, age 45, of Mechanicsville, appeared to be passed out. Edwards eventually woke up and was placed under arrest on the outstanding warrant for the theft of the vehicle. Corporal Yingling recovered a knotted belt, needles, and 2 glass smoking devices used to ingest controlled dangerous substances in plain view inside the vehicle. Edwards was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with Possession Controlled Dangerous Substances, and Possession Paraphernalia. CASE #41282-15

Disorderly Conduct – On July 15, 2015, Deputy Muschette responded to the ABC bar located in California, for a reported trespassing. An employee had ordered suspect Michael Brandon Lambeck, age 24, of Hollywood, to leave the bar after he acted in a disorderly manner with other patrons. Lambeck left the bar only to return a short time later. Deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to arrange transportation for Lambeck. While doing so, he became increasingly uncooperative and refused to stop yelling profanity. Patrons from the bar began to gather outside to see what was happening. Lambeck was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication. CASE #41407-15

Violation Protective Order – On July 16, 2015, Deputy H. Smith responded to a residence on Erin Drive in Mechanicsville, for a reported violation of a protective order. The victim alleged, suspect Donald Joseph Thorpe, age 47, of Mechanicsville, was at the residence in violation of an active order. On arrival, Deputy Smith saw Thorpe standing at the front door of the home with his copy of the protective order in his pocket. Thorpe was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Violation of Protective Order. CASE #41703-15

Assault – On July 17, 2015, Corporal Kirkner responded to Bugbee Lane in Hollywood, for a reported assault with a wrench. The victim alleged, suspect Carla Renee Clarke, age 37, of Hollywood, attacked the victim with a wrench. Clarke struck the victim in the head and back repeatedly with the wrench and bit the victim in the arm. Corporal Kirkner observed injuries on the victim including a bite mark. Clarke was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention center. She was charged with 2^nd Degree Assault. CASE #42016-15

Assault – On July 19, 2015, Deputy Muschette responded to the 18000 block of Point Lookout Road in Park Hall, for a domestic assault. The victim alleged, suspect Emmett Odyssey Harry Gantt, age 54, of Park Hall, hit the victim with an open hand and pushed the victim to the floor. Deputy Muschette observed injuries on the victim. Gantt was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with 2^nd Degree Assault. CASE #42244-15

Assault – On July 19, 2015, Corporal J. Somerville responded to the 28000 block of Autumnwood Drive in Mechanicsville, for a reported domestic assault. The victim alleged suspect John Francis Lancaster, JR., age 29, of Mechanicsville, grabbed the victim around the neck during an argument. Corporal Somerville observed injuries on the victim’s neck. Lancaster was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with 2^nd Degree Assault. CASE #42387-15

1st Degree Assault – On July 20, 2015, Deputy Roszell responded to the 15000 block of Point Lookout Road in St. Inigoes, for a reported assault. The victim reported he was involved in an argument with a relative over a lost Independence card when he was assaulted by suspect Patrick Shawn Dowell, age 25, of St. Inigoes. Dowell struck the victim in the face until the victim was able to pin Dowell to the ground. The victim let Dowell up and Dowell began to leave. Suddenly, Dowell produced a large kitchen knife and began chasing the victim around the yard. The victim fled on foot to a nearby home. Dowell was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with 1st and 2nd Degree Assault. CASE #42580-15

Detectives are asking for help solving a home invasion robbery. - Lexington Park

Lexington Park, Maryland - On June 26th, at 11:14 PM, deputies responded to a residence in the 20000 block of Hermanville Road for a reported robbery. The 63 year old male victim reported 3 unidentified black male suspects forced entry into the residence and began hitting him with what is believed to be a baseball bat. The suspects were described as being in their 20's and one was possibly wearing a white tee shirt, (no further description). The suspects stole money from the victim's wallet before fleeing the area on foot.  

The victim suffered a laceration above his left eye and was transported to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital by ambulance. The injuries were not life-threatening. 

Numerous deputies and K9 units searched extensively for the suspects with negative results. 

The Criminal Investigations Division assumed the investigation and detectives are asking for the public's help to identify these suspects.

Help SMCSO return a boy's stolen bike - Lexington Park

Lexington Park, Maryland - the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a boys stolen bicycle and finding those responsible for the theft. 

Between Sunday, July 5, 2015, at 6:00 PM,  and Monday, July 6, 2015, 8:30 AM, unknown suspect(s) stole a young man's bicycle from the backyard of his home on Rogers Drive. The victim would like very much to have the bike returned. CASE #39594-15

Who Am I? Theft of Alcohol - McKay's Foodland

Leonardtown, Maryland - the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the 2 suspects below. 

On Monday, July 6, 2015, at 5:00 PM, the male and female entered the McKay's Foodland located on Merchants Lane. A young boy, who appeared to be approximately 5 years old, was with them as well. The suspects concealed a bottle of Ciroc Vodka and a bottle of Risata Moscato d'asti in the female's handbag. They then left the store without paying. CASE #39840-15

APPREHENDED - Garrett Johnson

Vehicle Crash - Piney Point Road

On July 18, 2015, at 1:51 PM, deputies responded to a serious motor vehicle crash on Piney Point Road near Quiet Acre Lane. On arrival, deputies found 2 pick-up trucks had been involved in a head-on collision. 

Members of the Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 truck, being operated by Thomas Crowder, age 18, of Leonardtown, was traveling southbound on Piney Point Road. Crowder reported his vehicle experienced mechanical failure causing it to cross into the northbound lane and strike a 2002 GMC 3500 truck, operated by Joseph Adams, age 17, of California. There were no other occupants in either vehicle at the time of the crash. 

Adams suffered life-threatening injuries and was last listed in critical condition. Crowder was released from the hospital after treatment.

St. Mary's County, Maryland - The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the suspect in the photos below. 

On Saturday, June 20, 2015, at approximately 9:00 PM, a customer made a purchase and withdrew cash at the Cook's Liquor & Deli located at 18400 Point Lookout Road in Park Hall. The customer then inadvertently dropped her Cedar Point debit card and cash.

The suspect subsequently used the victim’s card to make purchases at Cook's Liquor & Deli and at the Walmart Supercenter located on Miramar Way in California. CASE #37115-15

7-14-15 Property Destruction - Unknown suspect(s) damaged a vehicle, while it was parked unoccupied at the Widewood subdivision pool between 7-12-15 and 7-14-15. All of the vehicle's windows were broken out and the body was damaged. CASE #41235-15

Suspect Charged in Burglary to Abell's Tavern & Other Crimes - Martin Bray

On June 28, 2015, at 4:40 AM, deputies responded to Abell's Tavern located at 20281 Piney Point Road for an alarm activation. Deputies found the front glass door shattered and the cash register missing. An undisclosed amount of money was inside the register at the time. A Lottery machine was also damaged during the burglary.

Video surveillance footage depicted a white male suspect inside the business. A white Ford F150 truck was also captured on camera coming and going from the business at the time of the burglary. 

On June 29, 2015, the suspect in the video was positively identified as Martin nmn Bray IV, age 40, of no fixed address, by Sheriff's Office deputies who had prior contact with Bray. 

Also on June 28th at 7:24 AM, a victim who resides on Hollywood Road in Leonardtown, reported his white 2009 Ford F150 stolen from the front of his home sometime during the previous night. The victim's truck was subsequently identified as the one seen on video surveillance footage during the Abell's Tavern burglary. 

On July 12th, the stolen truck was recovered in Dameron, stripped of valuable parts.

On June 29th,  Detective Hulse from the Criminal Investigations Division obtained an arrest warrant for Bray. On July 3rd, Bray was apprehended and transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center. The warrant was served charging Bray with 2nd Degree Burglary, Theft $10,000 to $100,00, Property Destruction, Unlawful Taking Motor Vehicle, and Theft Under $1,000.   

At the time of his arrest, Bray was already wanted by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office for an earlier vehicle theft and burglary. On June 1, 2015, a victim who resides on St. James Church Road in Lexington Park, reported his 2010 Chevrolet truck stolen. Ten (10) bags of mulch and a leaf blower were in the bed of the truck at the time of the theft. Money was also stolen from inside the cab of the truck. Detectives assumed the investigation and developed Bray as a suspect. Witnesses later identified Bray as operating the truck after it had been stolen, as well as attempting to sell the stolen mulch. 

Also on June 1st, a burglary was reported by a victim who resides on Earl Dean Road in Lexington Park. The victim's garage was entered and a commercial pressure washer was stolen. Bray was identified as a suspect after he sold the stolen pressure washer to a witness. On June 11, 2015, Detective Alexander obtained an arrest warrant for Bray, charging him with Theft $10,000 to $100,00, Rogue and Vagabond, 2nd Degree Burglary, 2 COUNTS Theft Under $1,000. This warrant was served on July 3rd. 

Additional charges are pending against Bray regarding the 2009 Ford F150 recovered in Dameron stripped of parts.

A vehicle turned on to Great Mills Road from Pacific Drive and failed to yield right-of-way to a vehicle traveling on Great Mills Road. The female driver and male front seat passenger of the at fault vehicle were flown to Prince George's Shock Trauma with non life-threatening injuries. CASE #40540-15

7-13-15 Malicious Burning - Unknown suspect(s) poured an unidentified substance on the blacktop located at the Wildewood Community Center and set it on fire. The basketball backboards, bench, and blacktop were also spray painted with graffiti. Case was forwarded to Fire Marshall's Office. CASE #41070-15

On Thursday, June 11, 2015, at 7:30 PM, the suspect attempted to pay for a pizza with several counterfeit $50 bills at the Pizza Hut, located on Great Mills Road. The suspect was seen leaving the parking lot in a white Chrysler 200 displaying Maryland Registration 1BV3865.

St. Mary's County, Maryland - The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the suspect in the photos below. 

On Saturday, June 20, 2015, at approximately 9:00 PM, a customer made a purchase and withdrew cash at the Cook's Liquor & Deli located at 18400 Point Lookout Road in Park Hall. The customer then inadvertently dropped her Cedar Point debit card and cash.

The suspect subsequently used the victim’s card to make purchases at Cook's Liquor & Deli and at the Walmart Supercenter located on Miramar Way in California. CASE #37115-15
