California, Maryland - On January 6, 2015 at 7:46 AM, deputies responded to an assault in the area of Armsworthy Court. The female victim, age 17, of California, reported she broke up with her boyfriend identified as suspect Demartez Tre'quan Thomas, age 17, of Lexington Park, on January 2, 2015. Since that time, Thomas repeatedly called and sent hundreds of text messages to the victim despite numerous orders from the victim for him to stop. He came to the victim's residence unannounced and was told to leave the property. On the night of January 3rd, Thomas knocked on the victim's bedroom window, but fled before the victim's father could locate him. Thomas continued to send threatening messages to the victim. All of these actions placed the victim in substantial fear of Thomas.
Shortly before 7:46 AM, the victim left her home headed to the bus stop. Along the way, Thomas came from between two houses toward the victim. He moved in behind the victim and attempted to place a plastic shopping bag over her head. The victim was able to pull the bag off of her head and began to defend herself. At one point, the victim was able to run away from Thomas only to be tackled by him in a nearby yard. Once again, Thomas attempted to strangle the victim from behind with his arm around her neck. The victim broke free from his choke hold and began to scream for help. Thomas ripped jewelry off of the victim as the struggle continued. A witness saw the victim being assaulted and yelled at Thomas to get off of her. At that time, Thomas stopped the attack and fled on foot from the area. The victim suffered several injuries, none were life threatening. She was able to run to her home and call 9 1 1.
Numerous Deputies responded to the area and attempted to locate Thomas. He was located at Great Mills High School a short time later and taken into custody without incident.
After a review of the investigation with the State's Attorney's Office, Thomas was charged as an adult. He was transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center by Deputy D. McClure and charged with 1st Degree Assault, Robbery, Reckless Endangerment, Stalking, Harassment; Course of Conduct, Telephone Misuse, Electronic Mail Harassment, and Property Destruction 2 COUNTS.
