UPDATE: Fatal Accident Mechanicsville

UPDATE: On 8-30-14 at 6:20 PM, deputies responded to the area of Route 5 and Thompson's Corner Road near the 84 Lumber in Mechanicsville, for a motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and a dump truck. The driver of the motorcycle, identified as Jose Luis Fuentes, 30, of Washington DC, was dead on the scene.

Members of the SMCSO Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the motorcycle, 2014 Harley Davidson, was traveling north on Route 5 when it struck the rear of a 1996 Ford dump truck being operated by Robert Dade of Mechanicsville. The dump truck had just turned left from Thompsons Corner Road onto Route 5 when the collision occurred. The driver of the motorcycle was ejected. No other injuries were reported.

At this time, speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors on the part of the driver of the motorcycle. Failure to yield right of way appears to be a contributing factor on the part of the driver of the dump truck. A commercial motor carrier inspection was completed on the dump truck.

Additional details will be released as they are developed.

BOOK SIGNING - ST. MARY’S COUNTY SHERIFFS - 375 YEARS

Sheriff Tim Cameron is proud to announce the release of the new book
ST. MARY’S COUNTY SHERIFFS - 375 YEARS.

The National Sheriff`s Association has acknowledged that “the St. Mary`s County Sheriff`s office is the longest continuously operating Sheriff`s Office in the United States established in 1637.” St. Mary`s County Sheriffs- 375 Years records the Sheriffs through the history of Maryland`s “mother county.”  Through empirical research, historical data, and Sheriff`s Commissions, the writing team of Cindy Allen, Grace Mary Brady, Linda Reno, Carol Moody, Tyler Mattingly, assisted by Sgt. Jeffrey L. McLane (ret.) and Mrs. Mary Ann Thompson has identified every St. Mary`s County Sheriff.

State Archivist Edward C. Papenfuse notes, “...we have reviewed all of the careful biographical research that you conducted... which documents an unbroken line of service to St. Mary’s County, the mother county of Maryland, back to the first appointment in 1637. It reaches an exceptionally high standard of documentation in which we all can take pride.”

The public is invited to attend the book signing at Ye Olde Towne Cafe, located at 22685 Washington Street in Leonardtown. This event will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 from 6 - 7:30 pm.

Self-Defense for Seniors at Victory Woods Senior Housing

The concept of self-defense for seniors deals more with not showing distress than with techniques to physically hurt an offender. Strength to protect oneself comes from an awareness of surroundings, a confidant presence, and an understanding of your abilities.

On Thursday, August 21, 2014, at 2:00 PM, Triad/SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) of St. Mary’s County will host a Self-Defense Seminar at Victory Woods Senior Apartments, 22611 FDR Boulevard, Lexington Park, Maryland. The presenter will be Wayne Dean, owner of Dean’s Okinawan Martial Arts and Self Defense. Mr. Dean will focus his presentation on Self-Defense for seniors which will include:

-          Break-Away Techniques: the skills and techniques to break-away and protect you in aggressive situations where one has been threatened or physically assaulted.

-         Pressure Point Areas: the ability to locate “pressure point areas” on the human body to defend oneself.

-         Cane-Fu Self Defense: seniors with and without disabilities will learn how to use a cane to defend themselves from physical harassment and assault.
There is one important psychological factor to remember regarding self-defense.  You are strengthening yourself and becoming more equipped to handle hostile situations!

Registration is not required, but encouraged. This event is open to the public and FREE of charge. To register, call 301-475-4200, ext. 1073.
