Christmas on the Square - Road CLOSURES

November 28, 2014, Christmas on the Square and Tree Lighting will take place in the Town of Leonardtown from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Lighting of the Tree and Santa's Parade will begin at 7:00 PM.  Activities include a live nativity scene, caroling, barrel rides, sleigh rides, train rides, hay rides, and carriage rides. 

The Town Square will be CLOSED to thru traffic from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  Washington Street will be CLOSED at Church Street to thru traffic.  Fenwick Street will be CLOSED at Courthouse Drive to thru traffic.  Lawrence Avenue will be OPEN.  Event parking will be at Leonardtown Elementary School, College of Southern Maryland, Ryken High School, Father Andrew School, St. Aloysius Church and the old Bell used car lot.   

     

Sheriff Cameron Announces Maximun Deployment Operation

Friday, November 28, 2014, the St. Mary's County Sheriff Office will be out in force beginning with roll call at 2:00 PM in the parking lot of the Walmart located in California. The public is invited to attend roll call at the #SMCSO Mobile Command Post. 

Sheriff Cameron and the men and women of the #SMCSO will have an increased presence in and around shopping areas, on roadways, and in our communities to ensure St. Mary's County shoppers are safe during prime shopping time.

TIPS for Safe Holiday Shopping

Sheriff Tim Cameron and the men and women of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office would like to wish everyone a safe and happy 2014 Holiday Season. Here are just a few tips to prevent theft while you shop for that perfect gift! 

1. Be smart about parking. Always lock your vehicle and ensure all windows are closed. Avoid driving at night, but when necessary, park in well-lit areas away from dumpsters or larger vehicles that can serve as hiding places for thieves or carjackers. Never hide a second set of keys in a vehicle, and never leave a vehicle running or unattended.
2. Keep purchases out of sight. Hide purchases and store bags by keeping them in a trunk, or bring blankets and garbage bags to camouflage your gifts. Change parking locations each time you store purchases in your vehicle in case thieves are watching. Try making expensive purchases last giving thieves less opportunity to steal.
3. Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and gifts, especially outside the store. Locate your keys before arriving at your vehicle, and never put bags down or on top of a vehicle to open a door. Do not make more purchases than you are able to carry. 
4. Only use ATMs in well-lit locations. Only use an ATM if necessary, and only withdraw the amount of cash needed. When possible, carry cash in your front pocket instead of your wallet or purse. Protect your PIN number at ATMs and registers by shielding the keypad from bystanders. Using a drive-up ATM is generally safest, but always remember to check your surroundings.  
5. Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Con artists may try various ways to distract your attention with the intention of stealing your money or belongings. Be wary of anyone approaching you needing "quick cash" or offering you a large check for a smaller amount of cash. You'll likely end up holding a bad check.
6. Shop with a friend or relative, but leave children with a sitter. Criminals are more likely to target someone shopping alone than those with one or more people accompanying them. Children should be left with a sitter, though, as they could actually hinder your safety efforts by diverting your attention.
7. Only make secure online transactions. When shopping online, check for a "secure" icon in the address bar when you begin the checkout process. The URL should begin with the letters "https". Always begin an online shopping session by typing the address of the official website in the address bar instead of clicking on a link from another website or email. This will help avoid "phishing" sites and emails which often look like official sites but are used to steal your financial information. 
8. Ensure packages are delivered to a person. When having items shipped, choose a location where someone will be present in lieu of allowing packages to be left unattended. Most delivery companies will also offer the option of picking up the package at their facility.
9. Save all receipts. If something is stolen, a receipt is often the easiest way to begin tracking the stolen item because it includes the time of checkout as well as pertinent information about the purchase. When making purchases online, save all correspondence and order confirmations.

Deputies Graduate From SWAT School

On November 21, 2014, Deputy Timothy Wesner and Deputy Shane Cameron, members of the Sheriff's Office Patrol Division, graduated from the Baltimore City Police Department SWAT School.

Do You Know Me? - Wallet Thief Mechanicsville WAWA

Mechanicsville, Maryland - The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect pictured below. 

Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 7:21 PM, a victim unknowingly dropped a wallet while fueling up at the Wawa store located at 27605 Three Notch Road. The suspect was captured on video surveillance picking up the victim's wallet and leaving with it.  

The suspect appears to be a large bald white male with a goatee, wearing a blue jacket and possibly gray or tan pants. The suspect was a passenger in the vehicle seen in the images. The vehicle appears to be a maroon or dark colored Ford Escape with a gray bumper.

SCAM ALERT - TAX FRAUD

       A National scam tactic is growing involving suspects claiming to be Special Agents with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or collection officials are contacting unsuspecting victims.  In many of these incidents, suspects will become irate and put a tremendous amount of pressure on citizens to pay a Past Due amounts immediately or face an Arrest Warrant through a local law enforcement agency.

Suspects are known to use tactics including calling from “spoofed” official telephone numbers and other strategies including:

• Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
• Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security number.
• Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
• Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to victims to support their bogus calls.
• Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
• After threatening victims with jail or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.

       In many of the incidents, the suspect will attempt to have the victim purchase reloadable gift credit cards and provide them with the information once the card has been activated.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:

1. If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue, if there really is such an issue.
2. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.

Sex Offender Arrested - St. Inigoes

St. Inigoes, Maryland - On November 21, 2014, Detective Corporal W. Raddatz of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Sex Offender Compliance Unit, located and arrested Jason P. Hollinger, age 40, of St. Inigoes, after it was determined Hollinger failed to register with the Maryland Sex Offender Registry following his release from incarceration on November 7, 2014.  Hollinger was charged with failing to provide notice as required after being released from incarceration. He was incarcerated in the St. Mary's County Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

Sex Offender Charged With Attempted Rape

California, Maryland - On November 21, 2014 at 10:30 AM, Sheriff’s Office Patrol units responded to a private residence in California, Maryland, for the report of a robbery and attempted sexual assault.  Deputies determined the victim received a knock on her door and after opening the door was confronted by a black male whom she recognized as being from the neighborhood.  The suspect asked to use the telephone and was allowed inside.

Once inside the residence the suspect suddenly displayed a handgun and approached the victim, while ordering her to remove her clothing. The victim refused at which time the suspect grabbed the victim around the neck and began strangling her until she lost consciousness. The suspect then took the victim's cell phone and fled the area. When the victim regained consciousness she used a neighbor's phone to call 9 1 1. The victim was subsequently transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for medical treatment of her injuries. 

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The victim was able to positively identify the suspect through a photographic line-up prepared by detectives. In short order, Detectives located the suspect, identified as David Leon Thomas, age 34, of California, Maryland and placed him under arrest. 

Thomas was charged with Armed Robbery, First Degree Assault, and Attempted First Degree Rape. Thomas is currently a Maryland Registered Sex Offender out of Calvert County and was also charged with Failure to Notify Sex Offender Registry of Address Change. Thomas had provided information he was homeless and living in Calvert County which was determined to be inaccurate. Thomas was incarcerated in the St. Mary’s County Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

Juvenile Charged with Leonardtown Burglary

Leonardtown, Maryland - On November 14, 2014, Sheriff’s Office patrol units responded to a residence for a burglary to a private residence.  The victim reported unknown suspect(s) entered his residence by breaking the lock to a kitchen window. Once inside, suspect(s) located the key to a safe and stole several firearms and knives. Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab Technicians responded and processed the crime scene.  The case was forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division for further investigation.

On November 16, 2014, Detective Corporal David Alexander and Detective Scott Ruest were able to identify a suspect in the case. On November 20, 2014, detectives located the suspect, identified as a 16 year old male from Leonardtown, and placed him under arrest for the burglary. Detectives subsequently recovered 34 firearms, approximately 1,000 rounds of ammunition, 8 knives, and 1 guitar - which accounts for all of the items and weapons stolen during the burglary. 

The juvenile was transported to the Sheriff’s Office, where he was processed and released to a parent pending further action by the Department of Juvenile Services. The juvenile was charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Theft $1,000 to $10,000, and Theft Under $1,000.

Arrests 11-18-14

PROPERTY DESTRUCTION – On November 10, 2014, Deputy Beyer responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center for a report of property destruction. Investigation revealed inmate Cornelius nmn Fenwick, 37, of no fixed address, pulled the wires from the motor of the air conditioning system located in segregation. Fenwick was charged with Property Destruction Under $1,000.

THEFT – On November 18, 2014, Corporal Rogers responded to Walmart in California for a reported theft. Investigation revealed an employee identified as Adonnis Oneal Barber. 19, of Great Mills, stole several IPhone 6 cellular telephones over a period of 2 weeks. Barber hid the phones in the store then later retrieved and left with them. The phones were valued at over $9,000. Barber was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Theft Over $1,000.

ASSAULT ON LAW ENFORCEMENT – On November 14, 2014, Deputy Logue and Corporal Rishel responded to Shangri-La Drive in Lexington Park, to assist the Maryland State Police with a reported domestic assault. After placing suspect Dat Phat Nguyen, 41, of Lexington Park, under arrest and in handcuffs, he began to become combative. Therefore, officers placed Nguyen in Deputy Logue’s caged patrol vehicle for transport to the detention center. While placing Nguyen in the vehicle, he attempted to bite Corporal Rishel on the arm. After he was secured in the vehicle, Nguyen kicked the rear window out of the patrol vehicle with his bare feet. The shattered glass struck Deputy Logue in the face causing several minor lacerations. Nguyen was subsequently secured for transport to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center where he was charged with 2 COUNTS of 2^nd Degree Assault on Law Enforcement and Property Destruction Under $1,000.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT – On November 14, 2014, Deputy Lawrence responded to the Sheetz located in California, for a disorderly subject. Store management alleged the subject ordered food and was refusing to pay for it. Deputy Lawrence contacted suspect Terence Darnell English, 31, of Lexington Park, who was yelling at people inside the store. English subsequently paid for his food however he continued to yell profanity toward people and employees inside the store. He was ordered several times to stop and he refused. English was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Failure to Obey a Lawful Order.

FALSE REPORT – On November 15, 2014, Corporal O’Connor responded to Yorktown Road for a reported robbery. The victim, identified as Daniel James Isom, 21, of Lexington Park, alleged he was walking on Midway Drive when he was approached by a black male suspect who asked for a cigarette. After Isom told the suspect no, the suspect produced a handgun and demanded Isom’s property. After obtaining Isom’s money and other property, the suspect walked away. During further investigation, Corporal O’Connor determined the reported robbery was a false report. Isom had lost his brother’s money earlier in the day and made up the story to hide that fact. Isom was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with False Statement to Police Officer Causing Investigation and False Statement to Officer.

THEFT – On November 16, 2014, Corporal O’Connor responded to Walmart in California for a reported theft. Loss Prevention employees reported a white female, later identified as Samantha Dawn Domm, 42, of Lexington Park, loaded several items in the basket of a motorized shopping cart and left the store without paying for the items. The value of the stolen items was over $200.00. Domm was also in the store the evening prior to return DVDs. She was asked to leave after becoming disorderly. Domm was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. She was charged with Theft Under $1,000 and Theft Scheme Under $1,000.

11-14-14 ROBBERY - A victim alleged he met two unidentified black males at the Hollywood Burchmart and gave them a ride to Leonardtown. The suspects directed the victim to stop on Shiloh Way at which time a struggle began between the victim and one of the suspects. Both suspects then drove off with the victim's vehicle. The vehicle was later recovered. Case remains open and is assigned to Corporal White. Case #60817-14

11-14-14 PROPERTY DESTRUCTION - A victim, who resides on Coosan Court in California, reported unknown suspect(s) damaged the side front window on her vehicle. Case #60934-14

11-15-14 THEFT - A victim, who resides on Brook Drive in California, reported unknown suspect(s) stole his 2001 Yamaha Blaster ATV from his yard. Case remains open. Case #61138-14

11-16-14 ATTEMPTED BURGLARY - A victim, who resides on Point Lookout Road in Redgate, reported unknown suspect(s) attempted to gain entry into  her residence through a side door. Case #61180-14

Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Leonardtown

Leonardtown, Maryland - On November 15, 2014 at 5:24 PM,  deputies responded to Point Lookout Road and Maypole Road for a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. 

Initial investigation revealed, Brian Todd Cooper, age 51, of Mechanicsville, was illegally in the roadway while crossing the northbound lanes of Point Lookout Road. Cooper entered the path of a 2014 Ford Taurus, operated by Richard L. Buckler, 69, of Leonardtown, and was struck by the vehicle. Cooper suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. 

St. Mary's County Collision Reconstruction Team members responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. At this time, alcohol appears to have been a factor on the part of the pedestrian. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision and have not yet provided a statement are asked to contact Deputy John Davis at 301.475.4200 X 1988. 

True Value Theft Suspects IDENTIFIED

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public's help to identify the suspects pictured below who were allegedly involved in a theft scheme at the Tru-Value Hardware Store located on Triangle Drive in Charlotte Hall. 

On June 26, 2014, the male suspect got out of the silver van, entered the store and after placing merchandise under his clothing, left without paying. The white female, who appears to be pregnant, entered the store 20 minutes later to return the stolen items for cash. She was seen getting into the same silver van as the male suspect.

California, Maryland - The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the operator of the pick up truck pictured below. 

Thursday, November 6, 2014, at 2:50 PM, several items of property were stolen from the bed and tool cabinet of a truck while it was parked at the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant located at 23415 Three Notch Road. The suspect, described as a white male, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, was operating the red Chevrolet pickup truck pictured below.

California, Maryland - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect pictured below.

Thursday, October 23, 2014, at 7:45 PM, the suspect exited the Walmart Supercenter located at 45485 Miramar Way, with a shopping cart containing a purple, plastic container. Several pieces of store merchandise were hidden inside the container. None of the merchandise had been paid for.

Arrests 11-12-14

DOMESTIC ASSAULT – On November 6, 2014, Deputy Beasley responded to a residence on Maple Road in Lexington Park, for a reported assault. The victim reported suspect Joseph Wade Barnes, 50, of Lexington Park, contacted the victim in violation of an active Peace Order. Barnes followed the victim demanding tools he alleged belonged to him be returned. During the dispute over the tools, Barnes pushed the victim with his hands and took tools from the victim’s vehicle. Barnes was subsequently located and placed under arrest. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with 2^nd Degree Assault, Theft Under $100, and Peace Order Violation.

1^st DEGREE ASSAULT – On November 8, 2014, deputies responded to the area of Hancock Road in Lexington Park, for the report of a man with a gun. 3 victims alleged suspect Shaune Donnell Carter, 24, of Bryans Road, retrieved a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at them during an argument. Carter then left the scene in a vehicle. Corporal Kirkner saw the vehicle heading northbound on Route 235 in the area of Route 4 and was able to stop the vehicle. A semi-automatic handgun was subsequently found in the front passenger seat. The handgun was registered to Carter. 2 loaded handgun magazines were recovered in the center console. A loaded 12 gauge shotgun with a sawed off barrel was found inside a suitcase in the trunk of the vehicle. The investigation revealed the shotgun belonged to another passenger in the vehicle suspect Preston Shaquonte Nunnally, 20, of Bryans Road.

Carter was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with 4 COUNTS 1^st Degree Assault, 4 COUNTS 2^nd Degree Assault, Wear Dangerous Weapon, Transporting Dangerous Weapon, and Carry Handgun on person.

Nunnally was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with Possession of a Short Barreled Shotgun.

ASSAULT ON POLICE – On November 9, 2014, deputies responded to a residence on Hummingbird Court in Mechanicsville, for a disturbance. On arrival, they encountered suspect Scott Edward Massey, 33, of Mechanicsville, who appeared to be intoxicated and was attempting to make entry into the residence. While deputies investigated the incident, Massey repeatedly yelled loudly at the deputies on the scene. He then took an aggressive stance and grabbed Corporal Harris around the shoulders. Corporal Harris broke free from Massey. After a short struggle, Massey was placed under arrest. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County detention Center and charged with 2^nd Degree Assault and Failure to Obey a Lawful Order.

Thursday, November 6, 2014, at 2:50 PM, several items of property were stolen from the bed and tool cabinet of a truck while it was parked at the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant located at 23415 Three Notch Road. The suspect, described as a white male, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, was operating the red Chevrolet pickup truck pictured below.

Sunday, October 12, 2014, between Noon and 2:00 PM, this suspect used a victim’s credit card to make unauthorized purchases at several businesses.

11-5-14 BURGLARY - A victim, who resides on Spyglass Way, reported unknown suspect(s) entered the residence and stole property. Case remains open and is assigned to Deputy Tirpak. Case #59148-14

11-5-14 BURGLARY -  A victim, who resides in the 24000 block of Budds Creek Road, reported unknown suspect(s) entered the garage and stole a Yamaha 4 wheeler. Case remains open and is assigned to Deputy Kirby. Case #59205-14

11-6-14 MAN WITH A GUN - At approximately 9:10 PM, deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on Old Village Road in Mechanicsville. The vehicle had left the roadway and was stuck in a ravine. The driver was armed with a firearm and was threatening suicide. Additional personnel responded to the scene. After a short stand off the subject exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident or injury. The subject was transported to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital for an emergency evaluation.  

11-9-14 THEFT - A victim, who resides on Pin Cushion Road, reported unknown suspect(s) stole tools from the back of his truck. Case remains open and is assigned to Corporal E. Johnson. Case #59780-14

11-9-14 THEFT - A victim reported she left her vehicle in the parking lot of the Burchmart in Hollywood overnight. When she returned the next day the vehicle was gone. Case remains open and is assigned to Deputy Logue. Case #59870-14

11-9-14 RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT - A victim reported finding bullet holes in his truck while on Russell Road in Valley Lee. Investigation revealed several subjects were target shooting at a nearby residence and may have been responsible for the damage. Case remains open and is assigned to Deputy Cole. Case #59936-14

11-10-14 BURGLARY MOTOR VEHICLE - A victim reported his vehicle was forcibly entered while parked at the Maryland International Raceway and property was stolen. Case remains open. Case #59982-14

Veterans Day Parade Street Closures

Tuesday, November 11, 2014, starting at 8:00 AM, downtown Leonardtown will be closed to visitor/thru traffic on Washington Street at Shadrick Street and on Route 5 at Fenwick Street. Downtown Leonardtown will remain CLOSED for the parade until 12:00 NOON. Deputies will be on foot for traffic control. 

Vice Narcotics Arrest - Eldridge Shade

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detectives began an investigation into the distribution of cocaine from a residence in the Mechanicsville area and the target of the investigation was Eldridge Eugene Shade aka “Al” (Age 49). A search and seizure warrant was executed by detectives with the assistance of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Team and K-9 deputies. Detectives recovered cocaine and heroin as well as cash, cellular phones and packaging materials. The drugs were packaged for sale and additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz. Suspect Shade is currently out on bond and is awaiting trial for “Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Distribute” which resulted from a search warrant executed on his home in February of this year.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a MISSING PERSON. GLENN ALAN DURYEA was last seen on August 4, 2014, in the Valley Lee area of St. Mary's County. There are no known critical factors related to his disappearance.
