MORE TELEPHONE SCAMS

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has received 3 recent reports of attempted fraud using telephone scams.

Two citizens, who reside in the Mechanicsville area, reported receiving phone calls from male callers identifying themselves as "Officers". In the first instance, an "Officer Foster" left a voice mail message requesting his call be returned and warned citizen(s) at the residence not to drive until he or she called "Officer Foster" back. The complainant did not return the phone call. The phone number where the call came from 202.864.1728 has been reported on various internet websites as a SCAM. The second complainant received 4 separate phone calls from 914.364.9546 and 800.678.0507. A male caller with a foreign accent left a voice mail message identifying himself as a "Federal Crime Investigator". During another call, the male caller identified himself as "Officer Frank Martin" and during another as "Officer Dan Blackmore". The male caller wished to discuss alleged legal issues with the complainant. When the complainant refused to provide personal information, the caller became irate and cursed loudly at the him. Both numbers have been reported on various internet websites as a SCAM.

A citizen who resides in Dameron, reported he received a phone call from 210.299.0977. The caller had an accent and stated he was from "Windows". He indicated Microsoft had given permission to call the complainant to discuss "issues that had been spotted on his computer". He directed the complainant to go to www.is.lonline.net where he was directed to download certain requested information. Recognizing this was a SCAM, the complainant hung up.

 

It should be noted: while I was typing this press release/public service announcement, (about 10 minutes ago), I actually received a phone call on my personal cell indicating I had won a $50 pre-paid VISA gift card from Direct TV. The caller had a thick foreign accent. I immediately HUNG UP. I'm not sure if this is an actual SCAM. However, the call met all the criteria - so why take the chance.

Please remember: If you get a call from someone you don't know asking and pressuring you to divulge personal information - like your credit card number or your Social Security number - it's likely a SCAM. HANG UP.  These phone call SCAMS come in all different shapes and sizes -  ALL with the intention of HOOKING YOU and TAKING YOUR MONEY. They also use the mail, text messages, or computer ads baiting you to call them for more details. Most often they come in the form of travel packages, credit and loan opportunities, business or investment opportunities, charitable causes, "high-stakes" foreign lotteries, extended car warranties, and "free" trial offers. Some callers tend to target specific groups of citizens; however EVERYONE is a potential TARGET.

ARRESTS 6-18-14 TO 6-23-14

1^st DEGREE ASSAULT – On June 18, 2014, Corporal E. Johnson responded to a residence in the 39000 block of Birch Manor Drive in Mechanicsville, for a reported assault with a motor vehicle. Two separate victims alleged suspect Reginald Alan Price, 49, of Leonardtown, intentionally struck them with his vehicle after he was told to leave the residence. Price also threw a brick at a third victim’s vehicle, which smashed out the rear window. Price then ran over a SMECO electrical transformer and a chain link fence with his vehicle. Price was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He was charged with 3 COUNTS of 1^st Degree Assault, 2 COUNTS of Property Destruction over $1,000, and Property Destruction Under $1,000.

ASSAULT – On June 19, 2014, Corporal Connelly responded to a residence on Waterview Drive in Mechanicsville, and made contact with a victim who reported suspect Randy Allan Boarman, 27, of Mechanicsville, assaulted the victim on 6-18-14 during an argument. Boarman allegedly threw the victim to the floor and slammed the victim’s head into the floor. The victim left the residence. When the victim returned Boarman began assaulting the victim again. The victim had numerous injuries consistent with what occurred. Boarman was located and placed under arrest. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with 2^nd Degree Assault.

ASSAULT – On June 20, 2014, Deputy Kerns responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center for a fight between inmates. The investigation revealed suspect David Robert Lowe, 29, of Great Mills, struck the victim inmate in the head several times with his fist. Lowe was charged with 2^nd Degree Assault.

1^st Degree Assault/1^st Degree Burglary – On June 20, 2014 at 7:00 PM, Deputy L. Johnson responded to a residence on Mary Lynn Drive in Lexington Park. The victim alleged suspect Lavonte Devow King, 22, of, Park Hall, entered the residence through an unsecured window. Once inside, King entered the victim’s bedroom and produced a butcher style knife. The victim attempted to take the knife and received several cuts. King then stabbed the victim in the forearm. The victim attempted to get away and was further assaulted by King. King held the victim down and refused to allow the victim to leave for over an hour. Eventually, the victim was able to call police. King was located and placed under arrest. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with 1^st and 2^nd Degree Assault, 1^st and 2^nd Degree Burglary, and False Imprisonment. The victim’s injuries were non-life threatening.

PRESCRIPTION FRAUD – On June 19, 2014, a pharmacist at the Tidewater Pharmacy located in Mechanicsville noticed a suspicious prescription submitted by suspect Tabitha Marie Wood, 23, of Mechanicsville. After contacting the issuing physician it was determined the prescription had been altered. Deputy McCuen placed Wood under arrest and transported her to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. She was charged with Obtaining CDS by Altering Prescription.

1^st Degree Assault – On June 23, 2014, Deputy Lawrence responded to a residence in the 21000 block of Great Mills Road for an assault. Two victims alleged suspect Krista Renee Hall, 30, of Lexington Park, threatened them with a kitchen knife after an argument. Hall held the knife toward the victims and threatened to cut them. Hall was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. She was charged with 2 COUNTS of 1^st Degree Assault and 2 COUNTS of 2^nd Degree Assault.

Have you seen this stolen HD Motorcycle?

Hollywood, Maryland - On June 5, 1014 at 10:00 AM, the owner of a 2000 Harley Davidson Fatboy model motorcycle parked it for sale in the parking lot of Moore's Driving Academy in the 27000 block of Three Notch Road. When the owner returned at 11:00 PM the same day, the motorcycle was gone.

The motorcycle has distinguishing purple flames on the gas tank and fenders with ape hanger style handle bars. The stolen motorcycle is pictured below.

7-7-14 BURGLARY - A victim, who resides in the Patuxent Homes neighborhood in Lexington Park, reported unknown suspect(s) entered his residence and stole several items of property. Case remains open. Case #36768-14

7-7-14 THEFT - Unknown suspect(s) removed a boat from a lot at Cedar Cove Marina in Valley Lee. The boat was found a short distance away stripped of motor/parts. Case remains open. Case #36743-14

7-8-14 Motor Vehicle Accident/Fly out - On July 7, 2014 at 7:51 PM, Deputy Lawrence responded to the area of Church Drive in Great Mills, for a motor vehicle accident involving a bicyclist. The bicyclist, a 8 year old male sustained minor injuries and was flown to Children's Hospital for precautionary measures. Preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist entered the path of the Toyota Camry; however the driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving without a license. He was transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center and charged accordingly. 7-8-14 Attempted Strong Armed Robbery/Assault - A victim, age 58, reported she was walking in the area of South Shangri La Drive and Missouri Avenue in Lexington Park, when two unidentified black male suspects attempted to steal her purse. When the victim resisted the suspects assaulted her causing her to fall to the ground. The suspects tried again to take her purse but were not successful. Both suspects then fled on foot. Case remains open and is forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division. Case #36830-14

6-30-14 THEFT – A victim, who resides on Claires Drive in Mechanicsville, reported unknown suspect(s) stole his mailbox form the end of his driveway. Case #35275-14

6-30-14 THEFT – An employee at the True Value located in Charlotte Hall, observed an unidentified white male suspect steal several items of merchandise. An unidentified white female suspect entered the store a short time later and attempted to return the same items for a refund. The refund was denied by the store and the suspect left prior to deputy’s arrival. Case remains open. Case #35274-14

7-1-14 BURGLARY – A victim, who resides on Sydney Drive in Lexington Park, reported unknown suspect(s) entered his residence. Nothing appeared to have been stolen. Case remains open. Case #35459-14

7-1-14 VANDALISM – Two victims reported parking their vehicles on Ridge Road in Lexington Park overnight. Unknown suspect(s) punctured 7 of the 8 tires. Case suspended. Case #35439-14

7-1-14 VANDALISM – A victim, who resides on Spriggs Court in Hollywood, reported unknown suspect(s) broke the red flag from her mailbox. A second damaged mailbox was found on the same street during a neighborhood canvass. Case suspended. Case #35478-14 and #35492-14.    

7-3-14 THEFT – A victim, who resides on Brett Way in Mechanicsville, reported unknown suspect(s) stole the rear license plate from his vehicle. Case #35862-14

7-3-14 THEFT – A victim, who resides in the Laurel Glenn Subdivision reported both Virginia registration plates were stolen from her vehicle. Case #35880-14

7-3-14 THEFT – A resident at the Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home reported unknown suspect(s) stole cash from his room. Case remains open. Case #35893-14

7-14-14 SEXUAL OFFENSE – A victim reported a known male suspect sexually assaulted the victim in a wooded area off of Woodstown Way in California, Maryland. Case remains open, forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Division. Case #35910-14

7-4-14 DUI/VEHICLE PURSUIT – Corporal Watters observed a truck traveling in the Country Lakes neighborhood in an erratic manner and conducted a traffic stop on the truck. Corporal Watters activated his emergency lights and siren and the operator of the truck refused to stop and a chase ensued. The truck returned to the Country Lakes neighborhood where it crashed into a wood line. The driver, Scott Nathaniel Brown, age 18, was apprehended. He was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Brown was subsequently transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and other related charges.

7-5-14 BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE – A victim, who resides on Caravel Court, reported unknown suspect(s) forced entry into her vehicle. Nothing appeared to have been stolen. Case remains open and is assigned to Deputy Manns. Case #36152-14

7-5-14 BURGLARY – A victim, who resides on Tall Timbers Road in Tall Timbers, reported unknown suspect(s) forced entry into her home and stole items and cash. Case remains open. Case #36075-14

7-6-14 THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE – A victim left his 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle at the Moore’s Driving Academy for sale. When he returned later the same day, the motorcycle was gone. Case remains open. Case #36458-14

7-6-14 BURGLARY – A victim, who resides on Valley Estates Drive in Lexington Park, reported unknown suspect(s) entered his residence and stole several items of property. Case remains open and is assigned to Deputy Beyer. Case #36533-14

7-6-14 BURGLARY – A victim, who resides on Sandy Bottom Road in Hollywood, reported unknown suspect(s) entered his unsecured shed and stole property. Case remains open and is assigned to Corporal Rogers. Case #36589-14

Vice/Narcotics ARREST - Maddox

       Detectives identified Latavis Matrell Maddox aka “Tater” (Age 30 of Lexington Park) as a distributor of cocaine in the southern portion of St. Mary’s County. Undercover purchases of cocaine were conducted and suspect Maddox was indicted by the St. Mary’s County Grand Jury. He was arrested and originally held without bond.

Vice/Narcotics ARRESTS - Buckler, Meador

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 2, 2014

Detectives received information that an inmate at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center was distributing pills while out on work release. The investigation led detectives to Charles County, where detectives partnered with members of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division. The two agencies worked together as the investigation continued, it was discovered that the inmate was operating a drug distribution network from his place of employment in the Hughesville area.

Further, the inmate was utilizing at least two individuals to pick up and deliver “oxycodone” and large amounts of cash from him and distribute the pills to users throughout St. Mary’s County. Recovered from the inmate were 739 “oxycodone” tablets of various milligrams and packaged for sale. The street value of the pills was more than $21,000. The inmate, who was returned to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, is not being identified until narcotics detectives from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office charge him with the various felony drug charges.

During the course of this investigation detectives discovered one of the “runners”, Stoney Louis Buckler (Age 28), was already under investigation for drug distribution from his home on Mechanicsville Road in Mechanicsville by St. Mary’s County detectives. The investigation against Buckler continued and on today’s date detectives observed suspect Buckler selling pills to Ronald Douglas Meador III (Age 37 of Mechanicsville). Both were taken into custody. Suspect Buckler had a total of 48 various controlled pills, 22 of which were “oxycodone” tablets. Also seized from Buckler was more than $800.00 in cash. Suspect Meador had purchased “oxycodone “from Buckler and “oxycodone” was recovered from his vehicle.  Additional charges are pending a review with the State’s Attorney and additional arrest(s) are expected.

Missing Person - Joseph David Greenwell

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating Joseph David Greenwell, age 17, white male, 6'02" in height, 250 lbs. in weight, with blonde hair and blue eyes, last seen on July 5, 2014 at 11:00 PM, at a residence on Lauren's Run North Way in California, Maryland. Greenwell was wearing a black sleeveless batman tee shirt and blue gym shorts. There are no known critical factors regarding Greenwell at this time. No photograph of Greenwell is available.

Do you know this THEFT suspect?

California, Maryland - On July 5, 2014 at 12:27 AM, a white male suspect entered the WaWa store located on corner of Three Notch Road and St. Andrew's Church Road wearing a red bandana on the lower portion of his face. The suspect went behind the counter and grabbed 5 cartons of Camel brand menthol cigarettes. The suspect was confronted by the store manager as he exited from behind the counter. The suspect lifted his shirt suggesting he was armed; however no weapon was actually seen by the manager. The suspect then ran out of the store. Deputies arrived on the scene and a K9 track was conducted, which ended in the parking lot of the Lowe's store.

The suspect is described as a white male, in his early 20's, 6'00" in height, weighing 180 lbs., with brown hair. He was wearing khaki cargo shorts, a blue Rocca Wear shirt, white shoes with light blue laces, and a red bandana covering his face. The suspect is pictured below.

ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECTS ARRESTED - JOINT PRESS RELEASE

 

On June 23, 2014 the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division Central / South Region initiated a joint investigation regarding the armed robberies of a jewelry store and the New Market Pharmacy located in Charlotte Hall, Maryland.  During both incidents detectives determined the same two African American males entered the businesses, produce a handgun and removed U.S. currency, jewelry, prescription medications and personal property of the victims.  The victims were bound with duct tape and suspects then fled on foot from the business.

During the joint investigation two suspects were identified and efforts were made to determine the whereabouts of both men.  During the investigation suspect Furman D. Troy Jr., age 43, was found to be residing in District Heights, Maryland and suspect Darrell C. Lee, age 46, was residing in Temple Hills, Maryland. Search warrants were obtained for both residences.  On June 30, 2014 detectives, assisted by the Maryland State Police Special Tactical Assault Team Element, The Maryland State Police Apprehension Team-Greenbelt, Prince George’s County Police, The Southern Maryland Information Center (SMIC) and Maryland State Police, Forestville Barrack executed Search and Seizure Warrants at the suspect’s residences.  Lee and Troy were both taken into custody without incident and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

Lee and Troy, Jr. were each charged with 3 counts of Armed Robbery, 3 counts of robbery, 3 counts of assault 2^nd degree, 1st degree assault, possession of a handgun, 2 counts of use of firearm in commission of a violent crime, 3 counts of false imprisonment, theft of credit card, theft less than $1,000, theft scheme less than $1,000, theft $1,000 to $10,000.  Both are being held in the St. Mary’s County detention center under no bond.
