Sheriff Cameron Bids Agency Staff and St. Mary's Farewell at Final Salute

Sheriff Tim Cameron receives the Final Salute from Retired Deputy Greg Laxton and Sheriff-Elect Steve Hall

Friends, family and the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office convened Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, as Sheriff Tim Cameron received his Final Salute on his last day after more than 42 years of service to St. Mary's County.

Sheriff Tim Cameron joined the Sheriff's Office as a Deputy under Sheriff Joseph Lee Somerville Sr. on July 3, 1980. Cameron was elected as St. Mary's County Sheriff in 2006 and served for four consecutive terms, which was unprecedented in county history.

We all wish Sheriff Cameron the best as he enters the next chapter in his life as the head of the Wyoming State Highway Patrol in January.

"Thanks and Farewell from Sheriff Cameron

It has been a privilege to serve as your Sheriff for the past 16 years and one of the pleasures of my life. During my tenure we have responded to many significant challenges to public safety directly affecting our communities and our profession.

I have been blessed to work with exceptional men and women, Deputies, Correctional Officers, and Professional Staff, who met these challenges with grit, determination, professionalism, and a deep commitment to public service. Your efforts have garnered national and international recognition for exemplary achievements in community corrections, community policing, problem-solving efforts to reduce crime and disorder, and valor in the face of incredible danger.

It is remarkable that the men and women of the St. Mary’s Sheriff`s Office, despite resource challenges, successfully work in partnership with our community making substantial contributions to the safety and well-being of our community.

I am grateful for the overall support of our elected officials throughout these many years. I appreciated the opportunity to work with the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County and our Southern Maryland Delegation to further our mission and improve our ability to serve our county. Through open communication we were able to improve employee compensation to stabilize our workforce and improve the ability to recruit and retain exemplary personnel.

Our community has proven itself to be resilient and supportive of its public safety team. I thank the people of St. Mary’s County for your trust and confidence in us as we work in concert with you to keep St. Mary`s County a great place to live.

Quite simply, I am grateful for the opportunity given to me to serve as your Sheriff and the consistent support I have received. I salute you all for your overwhelming support, dedication and contributing efforts to making our community a safer place to work, live and play. It is now time for someone else to lead.

Our Sheriff`s Office is in good hands and will continue to be a community-first, forward-leaning, progressive-thinking agency that is proud and proactive!

Wishing you all the best,
Tim"
