Traffic Tip Tuesdays: Seat Belts

In an effort to promote awareness of state traffic laws, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office posts excerpts of the 2018-2019 edition of The Maryland Vehicle Law Annotated on Tuesdays.

Adhering to the law will make roadways in St. Mary’s County and in Maryland safer for drivers, passengers, bicyclists, horse-and-buggy operators and pedestrians.

Mandatory Seat Belts:

Sec. 22-412.3 Drivers and passengers in a motor vehicle in Maryland must wear their seat belts. “Unless a person is restrained by a seat belt, the person may not be a passenger in a … front seat of a motor vehicle. Unless a person is restrained by a seat belt, the person may not be a passenger in a rear seat of a motor vehicle.”

The ticket for a driver or front passenger without a seat belt is $83. The ticket is also $83 for an unbuckled rear seat passenger but is a secondary offense. The driver of the vehicle is responsible for ensuring that all passengers are buckled in.
