Dunkin’ Donuts Presents St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office a Check for Special Olympics at Grand Opening Celebration

On July 7, Marias Icaza, the owner of the new Dunkin’ Donuts in Leonardtown, presented Sheriff’s Office Detective David Alexander a $1000 check for the Special Olympics Torch Run at their Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Mrs. Icaza stated “The Special Olympics is very dear to my heart. We have a gold medal-winning Olympian, who works for this new storefront, and it is amazing to watch him grow as a person and develop his independence in such a wonderful work environment. I love giving back to the local community, and this is my way of contributing.” 

Also in attendance for the presentation and ribbon cutting was Mayor Dan Burris, Maryland State Senator Steve Waugh, State Delegate Matthew Morgan, St. Mary’s County Commissioners James Guy & Todd Morgan, Leonardtown Commissioner Jay Mattingly and Town Administrator Laschelle McKay.

SMCSO to Increase Presence at Elms Beach and Myrtle Point Park

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks, will increase patrols in the areas of Myrtle Point Park, located at 24050 Patuxent Boulevard, California, MD, and Elms Beach, located at 19350 Back Door Road, Lexington Park, MD. 

Both Myrtle Point Park and Elms Beach are open to the public from sunrise to sunset, each day. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks have received reports of trespassing after park closing hours, including open containers of alcohol, destruction of property and fights. 

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office reminds individuals that Myrtle Point Park is not to be used as a viewing area for the Solomons Island Fireworks, scheduled for this Friday, due to the park being closed.

Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the wonderful parks St. Mary’s County has to offer. However, deputies will be on patrol to monitor any illegal activity at the parks. Violations will be enforced and may result in an arrest.

Vice/Narcotics Arrests

Carey Duwan Dickerson (Age 41 of Abell, MD) was identified by St. Mary’s County Vice/Narcotics detectives as a distributor of both cocaine and heroin. A search and seizure warrant was obtained. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Team, assisted by K9 deputies, executed the search warrant. Recovered on the search were cocaine, heroin, and a digital scale with cocaine residue, a cell phone and more than $500.00 in cash. Additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz.

Arrests 7/6/2016

7-2-2016 – Assault – Deputy D. McClure responded to the 21000 block of Ritz Drive in Lexington Park, for a reported domestic assault.  The victim alleged the suspect, Herbert Eugene Knott, age 44, of Nanjemoy, grabbed the victim’s wrist and pushed the victim to the ground during an argument; then fled the scene. Knott returned a second time and grabbed his belongings, then returned a third time, forcing entry into the residence by kicking in the front door. Knott was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with Home Invasion, Fourth Degree Burglary, Second Degree Assault, and Nine Counts of Failing to Comply with a Protective Order. 6-28-2016 – Theft – Deputy J. Lacey responded to the Best Buy in California, for the report of theft. The witness advised the suspect, Miriam Rachel Lorenson, age 34, of Hollywood, entered the store with a large purse, which she filled with several phone cases. Lorenson then took the phone cases out of their boxes, concealed them in her purse and quickly exited the store. The phone cases were recovered and Deputy Johnson made contact with the suspect, who initially provided a false name. Lorenson was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. She was charged with Theft Less Than $1000 and Did Knowingly and Willfully Assume Another Name. CASE# 33448-16

7-2-2016 – Theft – Deputy G. Muschette responded to the Kohl’s store in Lexington Park for the report of a theft in progress. The suspect, Raquan Howard Johnson, age 18, of California, attempted to conceal merchandise in a backpack and leave without paying. The second suspect, Tyreak Otis Braswell, age 22, of Lexington Park, passed clothing to Johnson. They were both transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with Theft Less Than $1000. CASE# 34239-16

7-4-2016 – Assault – Deputy R. Trudell responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center for the report of an assault. An inmate, Cory Michael McAndrew, age 25, of Lusby, assaulted another inmate during an argument. The inmate sustained noticeable injuries to the right hand, right shoulder, and left elbow. McAndrew was charged with Second Degree Assault on an Inmate. CASE# 34547-16

Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle – A victim advised a known suspect used the victim’s car without consent in the 36000 block of Manor Road in Chaptico. Deputy M. Pleisse investigated the case. CASE# 34722-16

Reckless Endangerment – A victim discovered bullet rounds fired through a window and lodged into the wall of the victim’s residence in the 22000 block of Valley Drive Estates in Lexington Park. The case is being investigated by Deputy S. Shelko. CASE# 34672-16

Theft – Unknown suspect(s) stole a victim’s Maryland Trailer Registration Plate in the 29000 block of Point Lookout Road in Mechanicsville. Deputy J. Bush is investigating the case. CASE# 34075-16

Theft – Unknown suspect(s) damaged the front door to a residence in the 39000 block of Lady Baltimore Avenue in Leonardtown. Deputy J. Pleisse is investigating the case. CASE# 34546-16

SMCSO Investigating Homicide - UPDATE

On July 5, 2016, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Patrol deputies responded to the 21000 block of Windsor Drive in Lexington Park for the report of a serious assault. Upon arrival, they found the victim in her yard suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The victim, Cecelia Darlene Stubbs, age 50, of Lexington Park, was transported to a medical facility where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Information was developed identifying Patrick Henry Bush, age 51, of Lexington Park, as the suspect. It was learned Bush fled the scene in the victim’s 2013 Nissan Altima. A lookout was broadcast for the victim’s vehicle which was later located by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, who, after a vehicle pursuit, apprehended the suspect on Maryland Route 231 in Charles County.

Bush was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. He is being charged with First Degree Murder, Second Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault,and Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle.

SMCSO Investigating Serious Assault

On July 5, 2016, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 21000 block of Windsor Drive in Lexington Park for the report of a serious assault.                                       

EMS units responded to the scene and transported the victim to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Sheriff’s Office to Conduct Enhanced Impaired Driving Initiatives

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2014, over the 4th of July holiday (6 p.m. July 3rd to 5:59 a.m. July 7th), 164 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. Those preventable deaths make up 41% of the 397 people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes over the 4th of July period.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Maryland State Police, will conduct enhanced impaired driving initiatives surrounding the 4th of July holiday, extending from Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4, 2016.

The efforts include increased patrols throughout the weekend. Officers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, in addition to other traffic infractions. 

The 4th of July holiday is a time to celebrate with family, friends, food and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on the nation's roads. The fact is, this iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes.
