Officers Thanked for Safely Removing Cows from Roadway

Ronna and her calf Big Mac

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office received an online thank you note on Wednesday for assisting two wayward cows from the roadway on Route 5 in Helen early on the morning of May 11.

From Margie Stone via Facebook: "A big shoutout to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff's and Maryland State Police officers for helping to keep our cow safe until we could get to her at 3:30 this morning. Momma and calf are both safe back in the pasture with the rest of the herd. Apparently the calf went through the fence on the main road and momma went after him. The calf went back through the fence but I had to walk her down the main road back to the farm road and to the barn.
To everyone who was involved, thank you for your help.
The Earnshaw Farm and TXM Cattle, LLC"

Sheriff's Office Deputies DFC Thomas Snyder, Deputy Nicholas Hill and Maryland State Troopers were glad to assist.

Forrest Center Students Complete Internship Program

Cpl. William Rishel, K-9 Storm and Forrest Center student interns

The second-year Criminal Justice students from the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center completed their 2022 internship program with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office on May 4, 2022. This year’s session marked the return of the internship program for the first time since 2019 because of COVID-19 restrictions in place during the 2020 and 2021 school years.

Twenty three students interned twice a week over a six-week period, working at Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, the Detention and Rehabilitation Center, the District III Station, the Circuit Courthouse, and as special guests of the St. Mary's County Department of Emergency Services. The internships culminated with a trip to the K-9 Training Center to meet K-9 officers and learned about their duties through demonstrations and questions and answers. The students were allowed to interact with the non-patrol dogs. The students also met some members of the Emergency Services Team and learned about the duties and functions of the team, as well as seeing a static display of the agency’s EST equipment.

After enjoying a lunch of pizza donated by Chief’s in Tall Timbers, the students were presented Sheriff’s Salute certificates in recognition of their participation in the internship program, and for their completion of two years of study of Criminal Justice at the Forrest Center. As he has since the inception of the internship program 15 years ago, Captain Steven Hall both welcomed the students to their internship at their orientation in March and provided parting words to the students after presenting them with their certificates at their culminating event.

Officers Continue Patrols Seeking Impaired Drivers

Law enforcement officers in St. Mary's County have seen an increase in the number of impaired drivers reflected in the DUI arrests made this year by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack.

In the first four months of 2018, Sheriff's Office patrol deputies made 36 DUI arrests. During the same four-month period this year, Sheriff's deputies made 64 arrests, an increase of 77 percent over 2018. The Maryland State Police in St. Mary's County made 96 DUI arrests during the first four months of this year.

“The number of impaired drivers that we are encountering on roads in St. Mary’s County is entirely too high," said Captain David Yingling of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. "Both St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Maryland State Police Troopers are actively patrolling area roadways on the lookout for impaired and distracted drivers.”

“Don’t needlessly endanger yourself or others. Use a designated driver or a driver service or face the serious consequences in court,” Capt. Yingling said.

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol results in property destruction, injuries and death. Impaired drivers can lose their license, be assessed fines, serve jail time, have an interlock ignition system installed in a vehicle, pay higher insurance premiums or lose their insurance coverage.

Make the right decision and drive sober or make arrangements for a sober ride.
