The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured above.  Sometime between Saturday, October 21, 2017, at 12 noon, and Tuesday, October 26, 2017, at 3 PM,  the victim's purse was stolen from the 38000 block of East Edinview Court, Mechanicsville, Maryland.  On Tuesday, October 26, 2017, at 3:32 PM, the suspect used the victim's stolen credit card to make a purchase at the California Walmart located on Miramar Way.  Anyone with information about this incident and/or the identity of the thief is asked to contact Deputy Holdsworth at (301) 475-4200 extension *8089 or by email at Daniel.Holdsworth@stmarysmd.com  REF CASE# 56561-17

Stuff the Squad Event

On Saturday, November 25, 2017, from 10am to 4pm, the Lexington Park COPs UNIT will host a "STUFF THE SQUAD" food drive at the COP's office located at 21614 Great Mills Road.  The public is invited to help the COPs UNIT load the trunk of a vintage SQUAD CAR!


The goal is to stock the shelves of ALL Lexington Park food pantries in time for the holiday season with non perishable canned or boxed foods and other items such as diapers and baby wipes.  All donations will be divided equally between food pantries.


The COPs UNIT will also be collecting gently used or new coats, scarves, hats, and gloves.


As always, this is a kid friendly event, so stop by and meet the members of the COPs UNIT.  There will be balloons, give-a-ways, and kids are welcome to take a free book home from our COPs Office Little Library.

Community Work Team

On October 16, 2017, the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, (SMCDRC), had their first Community Work Team project.  The Community Work Team is a new program where non-violent, sentenced inmates, incarcerated at the SMDRC participate in projects to better the community. This new initiative is also part of an on-going Community “Outside” Detail where inmates have for several years assisted in many areas of the county with clean-up projects.   This particular project consisted of two inmates, supervised by correctional officers, picking up trash and debris along the roadside of Pegg Road, and Chancellor’s Run Road, in Great Mills. In a two hour period ten large bags of trash and debris were collected.

 

 As of today, two additional clean-ups in the community have been completed which removed additional bags of debris and trash.  There are ongoing plans to increase the number of inmates and correctional officers to the detail in the near future. The Community Work Team project is beneficial to St. Mary’s County by improving the environment and quality of life for our citizens.  The Community Work Team project provides inmates an avenue to do something useful with their time and offers them the opportunity to give back to the community.  This program compliments ongoing efforts at the SMCDRC to teach skills, and earn equivalency degrees to reduce the recidivism rate within the county’s correctional system.

Employees Recognized

On October 12, 2017, two employees of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office were recognized by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions as instructors of the year. Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions had their 17^th Annual Instructor’s Conference, where both employees were honored for their exemplary work as instructors and knowledge of material taught.

 

Corporal Benjamin Luffey has been employed with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as a Correctional Officer since November of 2010.  Since 2014, Corporal Luffey has been assigned to the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy as an instructor.  During his tenure, he has served as Class Coordinator for Corrections Entrance Level Training Programs and instructed a multitude of courses to include high risk scenarios for corrections and Emergency Response Team Training. 

 

Correctional Officer First Class Ryan Harris has been employed with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as a Correctional Officer since March of 2012.  CFC. Harris’ primary duty is working within the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, and as a collateral duty CFC. Harris provides instructor support on various subjects to include Corrections Defense Tactics, Emergency Response Team Training, and Ambush Awareness Training. CFC. Harris’ expertise is well respected by the tri-county agencies.

ID Needed

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured. On Saturday, October 25, 2017 @ 6:53 PM, the suspect stole a Husqvarna Chain Saw from the California, Maryland Lowes Home Improvement Store. The thief was last seen getting into the waiting maroon colored SUV with the spare tire hanging on the rear, displaying the partial Maryland registration of “3775”. The California Lowes store is located at 45075 Worth Avenue.
