UPDATE: Greenwell Charged in Assault on Deputies

 

UPDATE: On December 30, 2020, John Sherman Greenwell, age 41 of Lexington Park, was discharged from the hospital into the custody of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. Greenwell was arrested and charged with the following:

Attempted First Degree Murder (two counts)

Attempted Second Degree Murder (two counts)

Assault First Degree (two counts)

Assault Second Degree (two counts)

Dangerous Weapon Intent to Injure (two counts)

Dangerous Weapon Conceal

Resist/Interfere with Arrest

Greenwell remains incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center on a no-bond status.

UPDATE:  Deputy First Class Carl Ball, along with Deputy Dylan Glenn, (currently in the field training process), were conducting a theft investigation at Big Lots, located in Lexington Park. Deputies were attempting to identify the suspect, later confirmed to be John Sherman Greenwell, age 41, of Lexington Park, in order to issue a criminal citation charging Greenwell with theft.

During the investigation, Greenwell suddenly attacked with a large knife he had concealed inside his coat. Greenwell stabbed/slashed DFC Ball on the hand, and Deputy Glenn confronted Greenwell and a physical confrontation ensued where Greenwell also attempted to stab Dep. Glenn.  During the confrontation Dep. Glenn went to the ground at which point Greenwell advanced above him with the knife raised. DFC Ball then fired his handgun, striking Greenwell in the right arm. DFC Ball sustained a significant laceration to his left hand and both Ball and Greenwell were transported via helicopter to area trauma centers for treatment. Dep. Glenn was not injured during the incident.

Detectives from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Crime Lab and members of the Office of Professional Responsibilities (OPR) responded to the scene to process and continue the investigation.  Detectives from CID are conducting a criminal investigation into the incident and members of OPR are conducting an administrative investigation into the use of force used by the deputies. Body-worn camera footage from both deputies along with in-store video surveillance from the incident is being reviewed as well.

DFC Ball has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. He has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. Greenwell is expected to be discharged from the hospital to Sheriff’s Office custody later today, Dec. 30, 2020.

UPDATE: Deputies Assaulted in Lexington Park

 

UPDATE:  Deputy First Class Carl Ball, along with Deputy Dylan Glenn, (currently in the field training process), were conducting a theft investigation at Big Lots, located in Lexington Park. Deputies were attempting to identify the suspect, later confirmed to be John Sherman Greenwell, age 41, of Lexington Park, in order to issue a criminal citation charging Greenwell with theft.

During the investigation, Greenwell suddenly attacked with a large knife he had concealed inside his coat. Greenwell stabbed/slashed DFC Ball on the hand, and Deputy Glenn confronted Greenwell and a physical confrontation ensued where Greenwell also attempted to stab Dep. Officer Assaulted in Lexington Park

 On December 29, 2020, at approximately 2:10 p.m. deputies were on scene at 21800 North Shangri-La Drive in Lexington Park, investigating an alleged theft. During the investigation, the suspect brandished an edged weapon, and assaulted the deputy. The deputy discharged his firearm and the suspect was shot. Both the suspect and deputy sustained injuries and were transported via helicopter to area trauma centers. The deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries and the suspect is listed in stable condition. 

Two Men Arrested for Shooting in Lexington Park

 

On December 28, 2020, at approximately 12:16 a.m. deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 21600 block of North Essex Drive in Lexington Park for the reported shots fired. Investigation determined two victims were seated in a vehicle, when another vehicle approached and fired multiple shots at the victim’s vehicle. One victim was struck in the upper back, and later transported via helicopter to an area trauma center for treatment and remains in stable condition. The second victim was not injured in the incident.

During the course of the investigation two suspects were identified: Tyriel Levar Gantt, age 24, and Terry Lee Kent Jr., age 30, both of California. Kent was located at the scene and detained. Gantt was located during a vehicle stop and taken into custody. Gantt and Kent were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center and charged with the following:

Gantt and Kent remain incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center on a no-bond status.

Identity Needed for Burglary Suspect

 

Jan. 4, 2021 update: The suspect has been identified. Thank you. 

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the identity of the person pictured in a residential burglary investigation. On Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020 between 6:30 and 9:51 pm, a man unlawfully entered a home at the 23600 block of Mallard Glen Way in California by removing the front door lock. The following evening, this image was taken on the front porch of a nearby home from the burglary.

Assault: On Dec. 17, 2020, Cpl. Milton Pesante responded to the 24300 block of Three Notch Road in Hollywood for the report of an assault. The victim advised that while laying in bed, Tammie Lynn Boyle, 58 of Hollywood, entered the room and began punching the victim in the face which was consistent with visible injuries. Boyle was arrested, transported to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center and was charged with Second-Degree Assault. Case # 78384-20

Assault: On Dec. 18, 2020, Deputy Richard Welhelmi responded to the 21400 block of Rodine Way in Lexington Park for the report of an assault. The victim advised that Janet Crystal Bello-Jones, 34 of Lexington Park, grabbed and smacked the victim in the face, causing visible injuries. CDS Possession: On Dec. 18, 2020, detectives with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Vice Narcotics Division executed a search warrant at 46844 Rogers Drive in Lexington Park. During the execution of the warrant, Lakeisha Lashawn Kelson, 33 of Lexington Park, was found to be in possession of Hydrocodone and Tramadol and was charged with two counts of CDS Possession: Not Marijuana. Theft: On Dec. 18, 2020, Cpl. Steven Kerby responded to the Ace Hardware in Charlotte Hall for the report of a theft. The store manager observed on security footage William Shawn Carter, 47 of Lexington Park, place two power saws and one power drill down his pants and left the store without paying for them. Cpl. Kerby located Carter with the stolen merchandise and he was arrested and charged with Theft: $100 to Less Than $1,500. Case # 78467-20 Kerby was also issued a criminal citation for stealing $76 dollars in merchandise from the Charlotte Hall Food Lion store. Case # 78470-20

CDS Possession: On Dec. 18, 2020, Deputy Tyler Westphal conducted a traffic stop in the area of Pegg Road and Midway Drive in Lexington Park for a faulty registration illumination. Upon speaking with the operator, a moderate odor of marijuana was detected and a search of the vehicle was conducted. A search of the vehicle located 15.2 grams of marijuana and Jamarr Lamont Smith, 39 of District Heights, was issued a criminal citation for CDS Possession: Marijuana 10+ grams. Handgun Offenses: On Dec. 19, 2020, Deputy Michael Rycyzyn observed a suspicious vehicle at 46359 Columbus Drive in Lexington Park. Upon contact, a prescription drug bottle was observed in the center console that belonged to no one in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted and a loaded .38 special revolver was located under the driver's seat and a short-barrel rifle was located under a blanket in the back seat. Antonio Jaloni Staten, 20 of Bowie, and Misae Tyjuan Walker, 20 of Capitol Heights, were both charged with Handgun in Vehicle, Loaded Handgun in Vehicle, CDS Possession Paraphernalia, Remove Label from Prescription and CDS Possession: Not Marijuana. Theft: On Dec. 19, 2020, Deputy Benjamin Raley responded to the California Walmart for the report of a theft. Tationa Gloriel Harris, 29 of Lexington Park, was observed paying for grocery items at the self checkout register, but did not scan or pay for clothing items. Assault: On Dec. 19, 2020, Cpl. Dale Smith responded to the Dunkin Donuts in Leonardtown for the late report of an assault. The victim advised that at the victim's home, Isaiah Tremaine Luttrell, 21 of Hollywood, strangled the victim, pushed the victim and threw a pizza in a box at the victim. Visible injuries on the victim were consistent with the assault claim. Luttrell was located at his home and arrested for Second-Degree Assault. Case # 78867-20

Trespassing: On Dec. 19, 2020, Deputy Benjamin Raley responded to the Pawn It store in Lexington Park for the complaint of trespassing in St. Mary's Square. Deputy Raley contacted Craig Andrew Kennedy, 56 of Lexington Park, who had previously been served a No Trespass order at St. Mary's Square. Kennedy was issued a criminal citation for trespass on private property and was also served a warrant for Failure to Appear and was transported to the county detention center. Case # 78884-20

Smith made contact with Melissa Jo Jones, 52 of Avenue, who was advised not to be on the property there. While in his vehicle, Cpl. Smith observed Jones walk through the property again. Wanted Individual- Sheldon Lyvonne Curtis

 

Dec. 28, 2020 update: The suspect has been located and arrested. 

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of Sheldon Lyvonne Curtis, age 39 of Lexington Park. Curtis is currently wanted on the charges of Attempted Second Degree Murder and Assault First Degree. Curtis is a black male, 5’10” and weighs 185 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Thank You for Making Our Christmas Food Drive a Success

Assault- On December 3, 2020, Dep. Manns responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Omar Jamal Brooks, age 34 of Nanjemoy, struck the victim in the face while the victim was seated at a table. Brooks was charged with Assault 2nd Degree. CASE# 75031-20

Handgun Arrest- On December 4, 2020, DFC. Budd observed a vehicle operating with tags belonging to another in the 21000 block of Great Mills Road, in Great Mills. DFC. Budd initiated a traffic stop, at which time the passenger in the vehicle fled on foot.  Antoine Keith Mackall, age 26 of Lusby, ultimately returned to the scene and was identified as the passenger who fled from the vehicle.  Located under the vehicle's passenger seat was a loaded handgun equipped with an extended magazine. Mackall was arrested and charged with Firearm-Possession with Felony Conviction, Regulated Firearm-Illegal Possession, Illegal Possession of Ammunition, Handgun on Person, Loaded Handgun on Person, and Handgun in Vehicle. Malicious Destruction of Property- On December 4, 2020, Cpl. Kerby responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported property destruction. Investigation determined Anthony Warren Berry, age 35 of no fixed address, intentionally damaged a sprinkler head in his cell. Berry was charged with Malicious Destruction of Property. Home Invasion- On December 5, 2020, Dep. Wimberly responded to the 20700 block of Hermanville Road in Lexington Park, for the reported disturbance. Investigation determined Nelson Leroy Battle, age 36 of no fixed address, forced entry into the victim's residence and began destroying property. Battle retrieved a knife from the kitchen and then pushed the victim as he went into the driveway where he proceeded to flatten the tires on numerous vehicles. Battle fled the area and later returned and again forced entry to the residence and fled on foot. Battle was located and arrested. Assault- On December 5, 2020, Cpl. D. Smith responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, for the reported assault. Investigation determined Angelo Brown Clinkscales, age 48 of Hyattsville, and Nathan Lee Davis, age 30 of Lexington Park, were involved in a mutual assault. Drug Arrest- On December 6, 2020, Dep. Raley responded to the 45000 block of Worth Avenue in California, for the reported check the welfare of an individual inside a vehicle. Upon arrival contact was made with Michael Patrick Horan, age 27 of Leonardtown. Horan opened the vehicle door at which time a suspected CDS smoking device was observed as well as pill bottles on the floorboard of the vehicle with one bottle containing suspected marijuana. Horan was found to have an outstanding warrant through another jurisdiction. Horan was taken into custody and located on Horan's person was a suspected Alprazolam pill. Inside the vehicle was an additional suspected CDS smoking device and a hypodermic needle containing suspected CDS residue. Horan was arrested and served the outstanding warrant and also charged with two counts of CDS: Possession not Marijuana and CDS: Paraphernalia. CASE# 75657-20

Violation of Protective Order- On December 6, 2020, DFC. Budd responded to the 23600 block of Mervell Dean Road in Hollywood, for the reported violation of protective order. Investigation determined James Patrick Ryan, age 46 of Hollywood, violated a valid court order by not vacating the victim's residence after being served the order to do so. Malicious Destruction of Property- On December 7, 2020, Dep. Graves responded to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown,  for the reported property destruction. Investigation determined Anthony Warren Berry, age 35 of no fixed address, removed a smart tablet from the booking area of the facility and intentionally smashed the tablet, breaking the tablet. Burglary- On December 10, 2020, Cpl. Beishline responded to the 21800 block of Three Notch Road in Lexington Park, for the reported burglary. Cpl. Beishline observed the lock to the utility room to be broken and located Anthony Tyrone Adams, age 36 of no fixed address, hiding in the structure. Investigation determined Bryan Jacquel Pendarvis, age 31 of Mechanicsville, assaulted the victim by grabbing the victim by the neck, causing visible injury.
