St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Takes Second Place in National and Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office competed with several other agencies throughout the State of Maryland as well as nationally in the 2015 Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC). The Sheriff’s Office was awarded 2nd place for its submission. The Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) is a way to recognize the excellent work being done by our uniformed men and women. It encompasses all traffic initiatives, year round, with the goal of reducing traffic crashes that result in injuries and fatalities.
The program is supported through a cooperative agreement between the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Several members of the Sheriff’s Office from the Patrol and Special Operations Divisions participated in this challenge.
The statistics from the 2015 challenge consisted of the following:
- 201 arrests for impaired driving.
- 552 seat belt citations and 83 child safety seat citations.
- 98 written warnings and 25 verbal warnings for seat belt
- 1703 speeding citations were issued.
Pictured: Corporal Brian Connelly, Traffic Safety Unit |
“Each year the Sheriff’s Office strives to expand on their educational and enforcement initiatives. The National Law Enforcement Challenge is an example of our commitment to the safety of St. Mary’s County. We look forward to exceeding our goals in next year’s challenge,” said Lt. Robert Russell, Special Operations Division.
The Maryland LEC focuses upon three main traffic safety areas – enforcement of Maryland’s occupant protection laws, impaired driving prevention, and aggressive driving prevention. Smooth Operator, Click It Or Ticket, and Checkpoint Strike Force are campaigns that make up a large portion of the judging criteria required. A comprehensive traffic safety plan, such as motorcycle safety, younger/older driver safety, pedestrian/bicyclist safety, and innovative programs or technologies were also a criterion for the award.

Lexington Park COPs UNIT Pedestrian Safety Initiative - Great Mills Road
Beginning August 4, 2015, The Lexington Park Community Oriented Policing (COPs) Unit, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Transportation, launched a Pedestrian Safety Initiative focusing on Great Mills Road, (Route 246) in order to address concerns for the large number of citizens that walk across and along this roadway. The goal of improving pedestrian safety is the responsibility of both pedestrians and drivers and involves educational and enforcement operations by members of the COPs unit.
“One out of every four traffic-related fatalities in Maryland involves a pedestrian,” stated Tom Gianni, Chief of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office. “Drivers and pedestrians need to pay attention and look out for each other because pedestrians ALWAYS lose when involved in a crash. Daylight hours are shorter this time of year, and it is especially important for motorists to slow down and look for pedestrians, and for those walking to wear bright and reflective clothing.”
Motor Vehicle Administrator Christine Nizer added, “This is a smart initiative to help keep drivers and pedestrians safe. This is a reminder for pedestrians to use crosswalks and for drivers to always pay attention to the road.”
FIRST TIME VIOLATORS, (pedestrians), observed crossing Great Mills Road in an unsafe manner to include: Failure to Cross at a Signalized Intersection TA 21-503(c) Penalty: $50 up to $500 and Failure to Yield Right-Of-Way to A Vehicle TA 21-503(a) Penalty: $50 up to $500 will be issued a WRITTEN WARNING and given Maryland Highway Safety Office Educational Pamphlet. To date, over forty (40) written warnings have been issued. SECOND TIME OFFENDERS will receive a payable citation.
Pedestrians are reminded that standing in the middle turn lane of Great Mills Road while waiting for vehicles to pass is ILLEGAL. If a crosswalk is not nearby, a pedestrian may cross the road. However, his or her crossing [the roadway] cannot affect the flow of traffic in either direction. In other words, do not cross until there are no vehicles approaching from either direction. Preferably, pedestrians should use designated crosswalks when crossing the street at all times.
Motorists are asked to do their part by traveling the posted speed limit and remaining alert. The speed limit on Great Mills Road from Gate 2 of NAS Patuxent River to Forest Run Road is 35 mph. From Forest Run Road to Route 5 the speed limit is 40 mph. Speed and distracted driving enforcement are strictly monitored, and violators will be stopped and ticketed.
"For drivers, I think we can all agree most traffic accidents can be avoided if we simply pay attention and obey the speed limit. Regarding pedestrians, always use a crosswalk, wear clothing that helps you be seen and revert to what we were all taught as children; look both ways before crossing the street! On behalf of Sheriff Cameron, I would like to commend the Lexington Park COPs Unit for their efforts and thank the citizens and business community of Lexington Park for their continued support of our efforts to make Lexington Park a better place to live and work," said Captain Steve Hall Commander of Special Operations.

Safe Disposal of Prescription Medications -- St Mary's County Drug Drop-Off Initiative
Prescription drug abuse continues to be a growing national epidemic. Addiction overdoses and deaths involving non-medical prescription drug use, especially narcotic pain relievers, have risen dramatically over the last decade. This growth is fueled by misperceptions about prescription drug safety and increasing availability. Research shows that over half the number of people who obtained prescription drugs for non-medical use received them from a friend or relative at no cost, while another 15% bought them or took them from a friend or relative.
Consumers can help reduce prescription drug abuse rates by safely disposing of prescriptions through participation in the St. Mary's County Drug Drop-Off Program. The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has a prescription drug drop-off available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It’s located in the front lobby of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff's Office in Leonardtown and is completely anonymous. Simply remove all identifying information on labels and place in one of the two drop boxes.
Since the Drug Drop-Off Program began in 2011, 601,015 pills, 525 controlled pain patches and 58 bottles of controlled liquids have been diverted and properly disposed. St. Mary's County is the only community in Maryland that counts individual pills/units to provide a means of tracking over prescribed medications.
"We have the blueprint, and we know the drug take-back program works,” states Captain Daniel D. Alioto, Commander St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Vice/Narcotics. “Although there is a national drug take back day on September 26 every year, here in St. Mary's County we take back every day.It comes down to a commitment from the Sheriff's Office and the community. This program has made an impact.”
Opportunities for safe disposal include:
• Two drop boxes located in the front office at the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office in Leonardtown. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• The St. Mary's County Department of Aging & Human Services Health Fair, Friday, October 30th, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California.
• For St. Mary’s County residents facing mobility challenges, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office will offer a pick-up service to retrieve unwanted prescription medications. Contact the St. Mary's County Department of Aging & Human Services at 301-475-4200, ext. 1050 to register. Uniformed deputies will pick-up your unwanted medications and safely transport them to the Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, September 26th. Last day to register for pick-up is
Thursday, September 24th.
In addition to proper disposal, proper management of medications can also help prevent drug misuse and abuse. Keeping medications out of sight and out of reach from others in the household; never share prescriptions or take someone else's medication, and only take medication as directed. A survey released by the National Community Pharmacists Association found that 75% of adults do not always take their prescription medication as directed. Many forget to take their medication, take less than the prescribed dosage, or stop taking it before the supply runs out. In more than half the cases, the patients made these decisions without talking to a healthcare professional.
Working in support of the prescription drug drop-off program and other overdose response initiatives are the St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services, St. Mary’s County Health Department, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, and Walden Sierra Behavioral Health. With additional input from local pharmacies and medical practitioners, the Behavioral Health Action Team was formed. The team is a subcommittee of the Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership. Its goal is to identify specific issues related to substance abuse and mental health, formulate solutions, and seek funding to assist with services.
