Tip From Citizen Leads to Arrest by COPs UNIT



Lexington Park, Maryland - On December 4, 2014, Sergeant C. Safford,  assigned to the Lexington Park COPs UNIT, received information from a citizen that a black male, riding a bicycle in the Millison Shopping Center was harassing citizens by trying to sell them DVD's from out of his jacket. Deputy T. Snyder, also assigned to the COPs UNIT, observed the suspect in front of the Popeye's restaurant attempting to sell DVDs to a citizen. Deputy Snyder observed the suspect, later identified as Wendell nmn Mathis, 55, of Lexington Park, reach into a blue bag containing numerous DVD envelopes with compact discs inside the envelopes. Deputy Snyder contacted Mathis and placed him under arrest. Additional counterfeit DVDs were located on Mathis's person. The paper cover's on the DVDs displayed movies currently playing in theaters. Mathis was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center. He was charged with Counterfeit Merchandise Under $1,000.
